Apparently Valerie Cruz (Murphy) and Rebecca McFarland (Susan) auditioned as Susan and Murphy respectively but the director liked them in their current roles better so he had them exchange parts.

On a side note I can't wait to read Coyote Dreams, I just read the preview chapter and I loved it.
