Picoreview: La La Land

Picoreview: La La Land: either too much reality or too much fantasy, but either way, a total failure to succeed.

La La Land is billed as “the kind of movie Hollywood doesn’t make anymore.” This is not accurate. This is the kind of movie Hollywood never made. It is not a slick, charming Hollywood movie musical. Neither is it a Hollywood style dreams ( Read more... )

Aside from what I’ve seen described as the self-congratulatory-Hollywoodness of it all, I cannot imagine why the film is on the awards circuit.

Hollywood does seem to be deeply enamored of movies about itself. Although Chaplin was okay and I adored The Artist, I watched both with the cynical eye born of that awareness. :P

I had zero desire to watch this film, and now it's negative, so your review is appreciated! :)

I think I liked Chaplin and not The Artist, but yeah, Hollywood thinks movie about itself is swell. I'm glad to have provided an appreciable review! :)

Mashed potatoes did a memorable star turn in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Leave us not underestimate mashed potatoes.

Wow--and this is the movie that broke the record for awards? I feel a lot better about not being even slightly inclined to see it, even though I love old-fashioned musicals.

I swear it's like the people nominatng for awards saw a completely different movie than I did. I mean, obviously they DID, but I assume it was also, you know, the same one... :)

I feel that way about many books that people rave about... Not yours, of course!

I'm going to see Hidden Figures tomorrow. Now that I'm excited about.

Have you seen THE NICE GUYS? I haven't seen this but TNG sold me on Gosling. I didn't have strong feelings on him before, but ::thumbs up::

I may watch this on dvd with my wife, but meh.

I haven't. TNG looked like the kind of sophomoric humor I don't like. Is it something else?

I wouldn't call it sophomoric. There's physical comedy and the main characters are low-rent fuck ups, but it's more absurd than juvenile. Also: sad.

I saw it was by the same guy who did Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which I liked, so maybe someday if I'm ever feeling up to dealing with sad again I'll give it a go. :)

You just made me realize why my roommate and had an argument about the ending. He liked it, I disliked it. It's exactly because in the type of movie it was supposed to be there should have been the happy tie up ending.

Yep. That kind of movie promises a happy ending, not a bittersweet "oh how we've all grown up" ending. The ending as it was would have been fine for half of what the film was, but...well, like I said. I didn't think it worked. :p
