REM's Losing My Religion, because of the depth and the words.

Godspell has a couple others - "God Save the People", "Beautiful City" (either the original or the remake); I'm not as enamored of "Day By Day", though a lot of people like it. And while we're on the subject, "Morning Glow" from Pippin and "For Good" from Wicked.

"Affirmation" by Savage Garden is a guilty pleasure that speaks to me that way. So does "Raise Your Glass" by P!nk.

"Could We Start Again, Please" from JCSS?

Billy Joel's "River of Dreams" maybe goes with the theme. And while Rush is not really strong on this topic, you might consider "Mission" or "Animate".

silkiemom points out I forgot "God Save the Outcast" or "Heaven's Light" from Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I knew there'd be a lot of stuff from musicals I wasn't thinking of, so this is great! Thank you both!

Oh, River of Dreams, I meant to get that on there, in fact, as I own it, and I just spaced it. Thank you! And what a lot of terrific suggestions, thank you twice!

"Inspirations" mix along those lines:

Some actual gospel ("Hymnal Mix"):

"Moses and Miners" which is sort of a mixture of the two:

I have the actual playlists from when I posted these on LJ, but don't have time to look them up right now. Tag is "mixes."

I must absolutely second this. k.d. lang's "Hallelujah," especially the live version from the 2010 Winter Olympics, is absolutely fantastic.

I'd also put in a vote for Dwight Yoakam's "It Is Well With My Soul," though I will admit Dwight is not an artist who appeals to everyone.

You might also consider Queen's "My Life Has Been Saved," Richard Marx's "Have Mercy," and Josh Turner's "Long Black Train" and "For the Love of God."

Mumford & Sons "The Cave" and "White Blank Page"
Marianne Faithfull - the ballad of lucy jordan
Toney Carey - A fine day
Steve Winwood - Mandolin Rain
red hot chili peppers - Snow (Hey Oh) or Under the Bridge
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Oysterband - 20th of April
malcolm middleton - ballad of fuck all
Dire Straits - Romeo & Juliet
Florence + the Machine
Death Cab for Cutie - Soul meets body
Kate Bush - Running up that hill
Wailin' Jennys - Travelin' Man

Some of these may be way the hell off, but thought you might like 'em anyway. ;)
