worst. cooking. ever.

I have, in a really stunning run, made two bad batches of fudge in a row and followed it up with pie crust worse than what I made at Thanksgiving, which was, up until then, easily the worst I’d ever made. But that’s okay, because the pie I then made was too sweet, too!

Srsly. *dies in a pit*

I’ve now gotten all the necessary ingredients to make ( Read more... )

fudge, baking, cooking

Oh, good, someone else who remembers PitDie, the game whose point was all the different ways you could die, the favorite being variations on how you could die in a pit. I liked "You die in a pit without a pony."

...how is it possible that we haven't known each other for 20+ years? Did you hang out on Too?

I learned about PitDie (and many other things about mainframe computers, along with an early chat system) at UMass-Amherst. I went to Mount Holyoke, and my senior year and a gap year afterwords I hung out with a bunch of the science fiction fans (UMSFS) at UMass. From these gentle souls I learned a lot about the seamy underside of the computer gaming world, as it existed then.

I am sorry about the run of Bad Cooking. I have those myself. There seems no rhyme nor reason to them. They sort of cluster up like the kind of migraines whose triggers you haven't figured out yet.

But I am very curious -- do you make your fudge with eggs? I've never heard of such a thing, but perhaps that explains its vaunted superiority as attested to by multitudinous fans.

I make marshmallow creme fudge, and the main ingredient in marshmallow creme is egg whites!

The vaunted superiority is honestly just an unusual talent for following the recipe on the back of a jar of marshmallow creme. I don't know why it turns out so spectacularly well (most of the time). :)

Oh, of course! I have made that fudge myself, when I could eat eggs and dairy, and it does seem immune to the ills that regular fudge is heir to. My mother regularly sent it to me while I was in college and it was always delicious. I expect the binding agents in the marshmallow creme, mostly but possibly not entirely egg white, have something to do with it.

I am getting ready to experiment with Bacon Wrapped Dates for yule appetizers, the secret seems to be the maple bourbon sauce... (hmmm so I should drink the bourbon first...)
