Writing Wednesday: Putting Handles on the Cups

There’s a Writing Rule that says “Write every day, no matter what.” You hear people tout this rule, just like every other Writing Rule, and since I’m dragging myself back into the swing of things after what amounts to a five month hiatus, I thought I’d address it.

Obviously it’s terrible advice.

I mean, yes, if you can write every day, that’s ( Read more... )

writing, writing wednesday, procrastinating

I'm having similar struggles getting back into the habit and fighting "I don't wanna." Except I have a December 1 deadline. Gulp.

I normally aim at writing every day, knowing full will that there will probably one day (ahem, yesterday) that I just don't manage it. If I aim at seven days a week and achieve six, I'm okay. If I aim at five and only do four, I'm screwed.

Can we go pick blackberries now?

This is just what I need right now. Mostly when I'm putting handles on cups I look at all the bracketed bits that say [what month is this happening in?] [how old is X?] [wouldn't B wonder about this sooner?] [describe the room, dammit] and so on. Sometimes I do one of the things I ordered myself to do, and sometimes I just move them around; it at least keeps the story in my head.

Thank you. Putting the handles on the cups is a nice fresh analogy and I shall cleave to it til it isn't.

P.

I think one of the reasons it keeps working for me as an analogy is because it's so very much not "sit your butt down and write" even if it is. :) So glad to be of help! *hugs*!
