blackberries, crumbled and plucked

I was faffing around on Saturday trying to convince myself to get my act together enough to Make The Apple Pie, and mumbled, “Or maybe I could just make a blackberry apple crumble, that’d be easier,” in the vicinity of our guest, who said, “I didn’t know that was an option!!!”, thus indicating I should do that. :)

I still have not got used to the way blackberries hereabouts are a spring and summer crop. It just seems so many ways of wrong. (This has not stopped me planting boysenberries against a sunny south wall. I doubt they'll ever achieve the splendour of your blackberry patch, but we do get gorgeous berries.)

Also, I was bewildered by Americans' bewilderment when I spoke of crumbles, until we (that is, me and America) realised that when I spoke of crumbles, they should hear crisps. They they spoke back to me about buckles, Betties, slumps and grunts...
