Family movie night: Spider-man 3

May 14, 2007 14:47

My four-year-old son has been dying to see Spider-man 3 since, like, February when the first billboards started popping up around town. Then to further wrench his poor little fanboy's heart, his Pre-K teacher and two of his classmates saw it on opening weekend. Well, a parent can only listen to so many heartfelt, impassioned pleas at the breakfast ( Read more... )

Daughter: What this movie really needs is a princess or a mermaid!

*giggles* I've been waiting for the princess remark throughout!

I've never seen a Spiderman movie (yes, I live under a rock), but this was still hilarious to read!

Well, you know my daughter would say the cure to world's ills would be to turn everyone into a princess. Powder pink dresses for everyone!

My nephew has told me repeatedly about the naughty spiderman who sticks his tongue out all the time, but he's not being rude, his tongue just sticks out. :)

Just went and saw Spiderman 3 today and I think it was ok. I'm not a huge fan of the series so I didn't have great expectations anyway. But James Franco was really hot. And then I realized the potential there is in Pete/Harry. Damn, I've no idea why I always find the slashable men in movies so late or, like in this case, too late. :(

Your son is adorable. :)

I think there's definitely slash potential between Peter and Harry. Look at Harry's death scene. I don't think Peter would have been as upset if MJ died since they had zero chemistry and she spent most of the film looking like she wanted to go somewhere else and get drunk.

Hee! I love your review. I agree that James Franco is indeed a hotty! I love how your husband was looking for Draco in the HP trailer. :-)

hmm, you're the third person to tell me that Spiderman 3 wasn't as good as the second one. I guess I'll just save my money for Shrek 3, Pirates 3, and later on HP5. :)

I really thought it was disappointing after the second one, which I quite liked. I know some people enjoyed it, but the broad humor and bloated plot sunk it for me.

I really think the biggest problem was that the beginning, frankly, just doesn't fit with the end, so the movie isn't tight. It starts off with Peter having problems with becoming too proud and self-centered, and MJ has her problems with that and her own life. Then the movie turns out to be about revenge and none of the other things go anywhere.

My friend thought it should have started with Peter and Aunt May learning about the real shooter's escape, because then we'd have known from the beginning what it was about and where it was going. (She also would have cut a lot, like the amnesia story and all that.) But I really agree. They needed to ask "What's this about?" and cut out everything that didn't directly plug into that. If they had I think it would have been a lot tighter, more like Spider-Man 2.

I think your friends idea has some merit because I think the Sandman's story could have carried more of the film. There really wasn't a need to have Venom in the story when you think about it. I'm not that familiar with the comic version of Venom, but did we really need the Black Goo to create a darker Peter? Couldn't that darkness come out of his own character? Nor did I find the resolution with the Black Goo finding another host and thus fixing Peter, satisfactory. But then you have Harry battling his own demons, getting amnesia that conveniently disappears, and MJ breaking up with Peter not because she's feeling neglected, but because Harry makes her. Argh! At that point, who cares? Suddenly, we're watching As The World Turns, not a superhero action movie ( ... )
