PART 2
The droplets of water became bigger and it fell with a greater impact, almost shattering the glasses and pounding the steel frame of the vehicle. The whole scene was frightening as if they were inside a box-office horror movie. Although the air conditioner was set to its lowest, the air surrounding then seemed to be even colder. It might be due to the weather outside or the very last statement said by one of them. They all knew that it was not normal. It was not normal to just blurt out those words. Something deep and dark backed it up and the four of them had the urge to know what and why.
“Hey!” The tallest one among them was still in the midst of confusion and slight annoyance. Being raised in a very close family and perhaps, due to past experience, it seemed that he burst out. “It’s not normal, you know! That’s a bit…rude. I don’t really know what words to say now.”
“W-wait,” the chipmunk-faced guy said as he leaned forward to the man on his left. He looked closely and studied the other’s facial features. Although the three of them seating at the back were slowly being failed by their senses as an aftermath of their reckless drinking, he could somehow recognized those familiar attributes and hairstyle. He said to him, “I think I saw you before.”
“Really?” The latter replied in a question. “But, I think that I never saw you before.”
The previous tried so hard to recollect his memories for the past. He really swore that he had seen him. As for his luck, it hit him finally. “I saw you on News Zero last Monday. You were there, weren’t you? And, your name is…”
“It’s Ohno Satoshi. Yes, I appeared on that show already but I could not remember exactly when.”
After raging from his seat just a while ago, the tall man finally found his words again. “Ah,” he remembered while point his left index finger to the man on the leftmost backseat. “I watched that episode too. You’re the angelic lawyer who was also featured in Nippon Daily.”
The man named Ohno Satoshi nodded to show his humility but he curled up his lips. He tried to hide it but the rear mirror reflected his smirk, a smirk which could not be owned by an angel. The two men with him at the back were oblivious of it but the others in the front were able to notice his demonic smile.
“So,” the driver spoke again at last. “What’s behind your saintly smile?” He glanced at the mirror and then searched to the right in order to meet the student’s eyes. He hit the jackpot.
The lawyer frowned with it and shot a deathly glare which no one thought he would give to anyone. However, it seemed that his mask was shattered into pieces. He was like a monster hidden inside an innocent child’s body. No, he was not a monster. He was the maou.
“That filthy bastard took everything from me when he killed my brother,” Ohno said with a tone full of revenge. “He took my life and I’m going to take his. Just one more card and the punishment would be into completion.”
No one dared to utter a word. The driver just silently stepped on the gas pedal and made a u-turn. They ran away from Tokyo and headed somewhere unsure.
“Hideo was a good person. He had dreams. We both dreamt of those. In an instant, they were snatched from us. He was killed. He was stabbed to death. That rascal lived a normal life instead of paying for his crime. They used their money and power to cover up his sins.” Tears were starting to form in Ohno’s eyes in remembering his brother. He continued as he clutched his hands over his heart, “Okaa-san loved him so much. She was in great depression after his death. She left me. They left me. I was all alone. I swore to them to let him feel this pain--”
“Hasn’t he suffered enough?” He was asked by the driver. “You know--”
“No,” he cut the other man’s sentence. “It would never be enough until he pays for his grave sin.”
“You know, everyone has sins, both venial and mortal.” The latter sighed. “It’s true that he shared his faults but it was you who did it to yourself. He killed your brother. He ran away from it and tried living a normal life. Your mother suffered and died. And you…you felt pain and sadness. You turned away yourself from the world. You lived in darkness. You planned for revenge. You gradually stole everything away from him. You--”
“Y-you,” the lawyer stammered as he tried covering his ears with his hands. “Y-yamette kudasai!”
“Yes, it was you who took away your own life. You forgot to live. No, you did not forget. You chose not to live.”
“YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING!” He screamed while crouching. He could not stop from crying like a kid.
It caused the taxi to halt. The driver unfastened his seatbelt, opened his door and stepped out of the vehicle. But what surprised the remaining inside was that he dragged Ohno outside and shoved him into the wet ground. He forced the man to stand up and punched him on the face. Blood dripped from the lawyer’s lips.
“IT’S YOU WHO DON’T KNOW ANYTHING!” He grabbed him up with the collar, “You had your mother when your brother died. You just lost two. Yet I…I lost six! I saw my younger siblings dead inside our house. No, I lost eight. Both of my parents died with them also! And you know the hardest part? I saw the one who killed them walking away casually!”
Both of them were in union with the rain. Both of them were soaked in pain.
“You know what I promised to myself?” He continued as he put the shorter man down, “I’ll kill him when I’m older. But now, I won’t. I cannot do it.”
“Why?”
“If it was a stranger or an acquaintance, I certainly would kill him. But how could I kill someone who treated me nicely since in my freshman year in Ichinomiya Private High School until now? TELL ME ON HOW I COULD KILL MY BESTFRIEND, HUH?”
No words were further said. Ohno tried to clean his clothes and his face from dirt. He stepped closer to the driver and looked at him in the eye, “It’s too late now. I must finish what I started.” Then, he walked away.
“Oi! Omae~!” The man left behind called. He had this immense feeling inside his chest. “Ninomiya Kazunari desu! I don’t know why I should be telling this but we’ll surely meet someday!”
The so-called angelic lawyer turned around for the last time. He nodded to bid goodbye and continued walking in the rain.
On the other hand, the driver also turned his back and went inside the taxi. There, the three men where waiting for him to move the vehicle again.
“So,” the high school student casually said. “Where are we going, Ninomiya-san?”
“H-how did y-you…” He sat there with confusion. He turned around to see the other two grinning at him. After that, realization hit him. They must have heard our conversation a while ago, he thought as he refers to his previous encounter with a man named Ohno Satoshi.
“Ne,” the tall man called their attention. He looked really hyped. “Let’s go to the beach!”
“No.” the chipmunk guy said sternly. “We’re not going to the beach. We may go anywhere but there.”
