She's a mother, an aunt, a grandmother, a sister, a wife, and of all the things she's gotten used to being over the years, the one thing she thought she would never be again is a patron of Milliways.

But here she is, and despite the icon she's much as she was

Thirty years on -- well.

La plus ca change, as they say.

There's a woman over by the fire, tucked into a much-battered armchair. The upholstery's different than it used to be, but if you look closely you can still see some teethmarks, varnished over, on one wooden leg. As for the woman herself, she's the sort who'll always be small and slim, though middle age is creeping in around the edges. There are crows-feet at the edges of her eyes, lines of laughter and pain creasing a face that's harder and more weathered now, and a scar curling under one side of her jaw; her dark tangled hair is streaked with iron-gray.

Her head is bent over a datapad in her lap, and her stylus is tapping away. But the moment the door opens, her head
