Hermione isn't typically a clumsy girl, but she does have a knack for having her nose in a book when she ought to be paying attention to piles of toys and video games by tables.

She nearly trips over the edge of the pile, but regains her composure before making an embarrassing scene with an exclamation of apology.

Lauren winces as she catches sight of the potential disaster out of the corner of her eye, but smiles in relief when it's averted.

"It's okay -- I know I'm taking up a lot of space. And these are only the presents for about five kids..."

It should perhaps be noted that, halfway through this, she realises why the other girl seems so familiar; despite her best efforts not to react, she stumbles over a word or two.

Lauren nods and gives a vaguely exasperated smile.

"And it's almost a military operation in my school." (School isn't quite a lie. Just almost.) "So many presents, so little time. I thought I'd cheat and get some of the wrapping done here so I actually have time to sleep when I get back."

"Wow."

His head is shaped like an American football.

"Er," Lauren says eloquently. "--don't touch them."

"I wasn't." he says just a little defensively, and folds his hands neatly behind his back.

To avoid temptation, you understand.

He eyes the wrapping paper. "Is it somebody's birthday?"

She smiles faintly and shakes her head.

"Christmas. In my world, anyway -- I think it's still autumn here."
