So what do you suppose did prompt this fashion for flashing LEDs in every consumer product from electric toothbrushes to ballpoint pens to rubber balls to running shoes?

Perhaps humanity has transcended its fascination with digital watches (DNA) by transferring it to some other blinky medium?

sometimes a blinking 12:00 doesn't fit or is too expensive

Humans, like cats, are fascinated by shiny objects. That, and LEDs (especially the red ones) are dirt cheap these days.

I don't know, but I have to say I was immensely tickled to open an envelope recently and find a blinky Google pin sent to me by the daughter of a friend, who just went to work for them ...
