here “I’m not sure Clark, but I think something stopped him before he could finish writing,” Chloe suggested, putting the two pieces of paper together she just found in the garbage.
Sorry Clark, I’m leaving.
Fare-
“Something…or someone,” Clark said, lost in his thoughts. “Chloe, it must have been that woman who he was with,” Clark said.
“It doesn’t make any sense Clark, I mean, why would she stop him from doing this? He was going to leave you for her,” Chloe replied, that last statement hurting Clark even more.
“Then why is it unfinished, bloody and torn in half?” Clark asked, heart still beating fast after the discovery of both farewell message Oliver left him.
“I don’t know Clark, I’m totally clueless on this point,” Chloe said, looking at him sadly.
“Unless…Oliver didn’t want to leave you,” she suddenly said after a moment of silence.
“What do you mean?” Clark asked.
“Maybe he was forced to leave you,” she replied.
“I don’t know…” he said absently. “By the way, how did the press know so quickly he’s indeed one of those vanished men?”
“Apparently, many of his secretaries called him and even his close friends weren’t able to contact him. His butler found the note yesterday, seeing his master wasn’t responding to anyone on his cell phone and he called the police.” Chloe explained.
“Looks like you have already done some researching,” Clark said, with brief smile. “The newspaper didn’t mention that the person he was leaving was me?” Clark asked, surprised to see that their relationship wasn’t exposed. “The journalists usually jump on that kind of information,” he added.
“I don’t know Clark, you’ll have to ask Oliver’s butler in person,” Chloe replied. “In any case, this woman has inevitably something to do with those missing men,” she added.
“Do you think she’s responsible?” he asked but his friend just shrugged. “We should try to locate his cell phone,” he said.
“Clark, his cell phone is right here, on his desk,” Chloe replied, pointing at the phone.
“No, this is his work cell phone, he only uses this one for business,” Clark said.
“Whoa, you guys are pretty close huh,” she stated with a smile, apparently impressed.
“Chloe, this is not the time” he said bitterly.
“Alright then, let’s head back at my apartment first, I left my laptop there,” she said cheerfully, heading toward the elevator. Clark followed her, not knowing what to think anymore. Has Oliver actually cheated on him or not? Where could he be now? As they were exiting the elevator at the first floor, the hostess called him, behind the counter.
“Hello Mr Kent,” she said politely with a sad smile.
“Hi,” Clark responded, turning around to see her.
“Mr Queen left a message for you yesterday, before he...vanished,” she said quickly “Anyway, I tried to give it to you yesterday and this morning but I was quite busy on the phone and the press came for an interview…” she added, obviously distressed by the disappearance of her boss. She gave a small envelope to Clark who thanked her quickly before leaving the building with Chloe.
“So, what did he write?” Chloe asked impatiently right after they got in the car.
He opened the envelope and took a small card out of it.
I’ll be waiting for you so you’d better look sexy.
Love you, Ollie.
His heart ached and he couldn’t hold back the tears coming to his eyes. It was even harder now to doubt Oliver’s faithfulness. He was missing him so badly and couldn’t even imagine living without him any longer. He leaned his head against the window, lost in his memories and watching the buildings going by rapidly.
The sky was clear and the sun was bright, but even the beautiful scenery couldn’t reach the dark depth where his heart had sunk; nothing could, at least, nothing but Oliver.
The sight of a crying Clark caught Chloe’s attention, although he was silent. However, she tried to stay focus on the road and just gazed at her best friend from time to time. He was obviously upset and looked miserable and there was nothing she could do to cheer him up, which made her feel even worse. He was still holding the card in his hand but his gaze seemed empty. She could read the card at a stop, and understood Clark’s sudden breaking down.
Fortunately, they were soon at the Talon and they both entered in the apartment. Lois was working on the laptop and Clark dried his tears to look presentable, trying to hide how distressed he really was.
“Hey guys” Lois said cheerfully but her smile quickly faded when she saw Clark.
“Hi Lois,” Chloe replied, and Clark just smiled in response.
“So, how are you doing?” she said sympathetically to Clark as he sat down on the couch while Chloe was making coffee.
“I’m fine,” he replied and sighed.
“Don’t worry, everything’s going to be okay,” she said with a smile as she sat down next to him on the couch. “Are you sure you’re alright?” she asked, obviously worried about him.
“Yes, thanks for asking Lois,” Clark replied, smiling back.
“No problem,” she replied and winked. “So, what have you guys been up to?” she asked, curious.
“Well, we’re looking for Oliver actually,” Chloe replied, coming over with cups of coffee she hold out to Lois and Clark.
“Really? What did you find out?” Lois asked.
“Nothing important so far,” Chloe replied. “We were going to try locating his cell phone,” she added, sitting on the seat Lois just left and taking control of the laptop.
“You’re writing an article about the vanished men?” Chloe said with surprise.
“Uh, yeah, kind of,” Lois replied. “It’s not as if I want to, my boss told me to,” she added as though she felt guilty.
“Lois, I’m not judging you,” Chloe replied with a chuckle. After a few minutes of silence, Chloe looked away from the screen and showed a sad face. Expecting the worse, Clark put all his hopes away.
“Clark, I’m so sorry, Oliver’s cell phone is nowhere to be found. It certainly shut off,” she said.
The statement his best friend just confirmed hit him as badly as kryptonite would have. Oliver had definitely vanished and Clark feared he would never see his boyfriend again. He buried his head in his head and sighed while his best friends were comforting him. He knew they were being nice to him, but he just couldn’t hear them, he was consumed by Oliver. His world was falling apart and he wanted nothing but see Oliver, to hug him and kiss him.
“Clark, are you okay?” Chloe asked for the nth time.
“Uh, yeah, I’m sorry, I just…you know, I need to be alone,” he replied, breathing heavily.
“I’m going to go, I’ll see you later guys,” he added quickly and left the apartment after what he headed to the penthouse where he and Oliver used to spend most of their time together.
He arrived at the deserted place and went straight to the bedroom where he fell on the bed. It was barely 3 in the afternoon, he still hasn’t eaten anything for lunch and realised Chloe hasn’t either because of him. He will apologize later but for now, he didn’t feel like doing anything but lay on the bed he shared with his lover. The sheets were soft and still had the smell of Oliver. He closed his eyes and could see him, spiky blond hair, intense brown eyes and a gorgeous body. The man was so generous, kind and brilliant.
That’s why he couldn’t just give up on Oliver. He missed and loved him too much. So when Clark got up off the king sized bed, he was determined to find his lover, no matter how long or how hard it would be.
