DELITA AND LARSA FIC OH DEAR LORD.

.

So, I have been ruminating on empire a lot these days. Between that Quartet, and this?

The difference is, this KICKED ASS from the start, and the Quartet only will when it is finished.

I post it directly here because of its crossoverish nature, even though...well, you'll see.

I really want ya'll to read this. It's...special.

...Just before I got on the Internet I was reading the chapter in Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man that dealt with Nietzsche's idea of the latter. XD;

Tocqueville:

Above this race of men stands an immense and tutelary power, which takes upon itself alone to secure their gratifications and to watch over their fate. That power is absolute, minute, regular, provident, and mild. It would be like the authority of a parent if, like that authority, its object was to prepare men for manhood; but it seeks, on the contrary, to keep them in perpetual childhood; it is well content that the people should rejoice, provided they think of nothing but rejoicing.

...I dunno, I had 15 minutes to waste so I picked something off the pile and opened it in the middle. XD; This is the second day in a row I've had this sort of synchronicity happen while reading fic.

Lord, how could I have overlooked this little gem of a fic before?! I know I was looking forward to it in the past (because I'm not totally stupid)... and sort of just let it pass without comment before (because I suck)... and didn't bother to read it till now (whyyyyyyy?!) But oh! It's such a little treasure of a study of both a man and a kingdom! Your Delita is note-perfect (I love how many noble ideals you can see him already carrying forth here-- and already see how quickly they'll be shattered in the face of temptation).

And your Larsa is, as always, a revelation. I mean, he sort of makes my skin crawl as well, for all the reasons your Delita notes. (Children, after all, are meant to grow up and learn to be independent-- but I doubt Larsa ever menat for them to do so...) But he's so brilliant and note-perfect and this is exactly how I see him ending up if the world were just a little less kind...

There was one I loved, and let fly free. I did not bind her, but that which I would have twined her in followed her as the ( ... )

Yes, you are entirely correct. ::grins::

In the months after she left him, well, first he was inconsolable and possessive and pissed, then he spent at least four months tracking her every move, and this is during the preparation for the wedding to Adina. The wedding itself was about ten months after the breakup.

Yes, he tried to find her again. He even saw her again from afar, on a couple of his Lamont jaunts. But he did not reveal himself to her, and she did not see him until after he was dead.

Larsa felt pissed? Well, wasn't that rich of him, considering what he thought she'd put up with just to be his adoring little mistress for the rest of her life.

...Aaargh, I'm getting all indignant on her behalf and this isn't even something that happened in the actual game! But on the double plus side, all this detail is terribly inspiring. XD

And actually, a little surprising as well. I honestly didn't think your Swansong Larsa felt that... well... strongly about Penelo. He just seemed to sort of carry on with what he was doing with a minimum of fuss and bother after she left. He certainly spoke about her calmly enough to Ashe, albeit with hints that he didn't seem to think he was doing anything wrong with trying to double up with her and Adina. But I suppose from Ashe's point of view (and from Penelo's! I shall wield the cudgel of irony very strongly soon!), he probably didn't have much reason to be. After all, the mistresses of men in power tend to come and go, right?

Of course he felt pissed. And mostly at himself for making that happen. and rightly so.

He did feel strongly about her. But, as she and he both said, his first love was Peace, and he was already committed to that. He never stopped loving her or wanting her, or at least the idea of her that he persisted in perceiving. And he also did not see it as "doubling up"--a wife and a mistress have different funtcions. In the words of a certain "hero" from a certain musical,

They fold up their futures with perfumed hands,
but you face the future with no demands.
Some girls expect things others think nothing of.
Some girls you marry, some you love.
