In this last set of reviews, a book I shouldn't like but do anyway, a book I should like and just don't, and two books nearly everyone will like!

And then there's the nod to another fandom in the character of Sulu's roommate -- Illya. A surly, compact Russian who actually warns Sulu not to awake him suddenly lest he react dangerously. Quite obviously McIntyre is an UNCLE fan (Stephan's Siberian forest cat is named Illya as well).

Totally left field but UNCLE connects to Star Trek on a more obscure note : Nimoy & Shatner were the guest stars in one of the early UNCLE episodes, the Project Strigas Affair, predating 'Trek by some years.

Yes, my brain's way too full of trivia. Thanks for the reviews!

I noticed Stephan's cat was Illya this time around! She's obviously quite fond of the series. :) I definitely have to add it to my stack of DVDs to watch. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only person who finds her charming in that book! I think she's quite awesome there, and her discussions of love and career with Guy are really nicely done.

Great reviews, Mithen!

Hmm, sounds like the Entropy Effect would definitely be fun to read. :)

Singing space seals, eh? Crystal tears? Now why am I reminded of the Hoboken penguin in the Bugs Bunny cartoon that cried ice cubes? ;)

Oh man, the Entropy Effect is fantastic! And I believe it's been re-issued, too, so it's not hard to find like some of the others. I highly recommend it.

Crystal tears, lol! She makes a necklace of it and wears it as a memento of her love, and it really should not work. :)

I really like Entropy Effect, and Enterprise: The First Adventure. I haven't read the others, mostly because I've never been a big Uhura fan. I think what really turned me off of her character was in Mirror, Mirror and it has nothing to do with Nichelle Nichols or the character, but with the way her character was written.

The line "Captain, I'm frightened" always bothered me. Like she's the weak female that needs her captain to save her and make her feel secure. She's in Star Fleet, for cripes sake. She should be able to hold herself together better than that.

And of course, it was the first Star Trek episode I ever saw, so that's always stuck with me as my first impression of her character. I know there was much more to her than that, but that first impression is hard to shake.

Wow, "Mirror, Mirror" would be a very weird first episode to run into! And yeah, not so good for Uhura. :( It's hard to get past those first impressions, too. Most of my image of Uhura is fanon in the long run!

I loved this story also. Janet Kagen was a Nebula Award winning writer who to my knowledge only published a number of short stories and two books -- HELLSPARK (a book with a heroine very similar to Evan Wilson) and MIRABILLE (a collection of short stories put together into a novel. According to what I heard at an SF convention, she had proposed a sequel to "Uhura's Song" but the proposal was turned down.

Darn! A sequel about the Sivaoans and the Eeaiouians finally getting back together would have been totally awesome. I shall have to settle for fic, I guess...
