He noticed, however, that Thorin had moved to stand between Bilbo and the worst of the blustering wind.

*squees quietly*

"By a great force of evil in this world who went by the name of Annatar, the Gift-Giver.

Oh my, Thorin talking about Sauron!

"The key to the king's chambers. I took it from him when he embraced me in welcome."

Thorin stared at him a moment. Then he brought his forehead to Bilbo's, a brief touch. "Thank you," he murmured.

*squees quietly again*

"Grandfather," Thorin moaned.

*wibbles a lot* Oh, poor Thorin! *hugs him gently*

"No, you won't," said Thorin, and Thrór stopped, puzzlement creasing his filthy face. "You would never hurt the Line of Durin, no matter how lost to the sickness you were. This is why I gave you my fealty--and my love," he finished in a bare whisper.

Oh! Thorin! *wibbles again*

Bilbo opened his mouth to argue, but he shook his head. "I will not risk the lives of those I love against my father," he said. "Yours above all."

*flails quietly*

Thorin moved

Oh my, Thorin talking about Sauron!

The dwarves always seem so relatively unaware of history (I assume that's because it's always the elves that do the infodump history lessons) and so I'm really curious about how they see some of the great events of the past!

*wibbles a lot* Oh, poor Thorin! *hugs him gently*

Ugh, that was so hard to write, poor Thorin! I'm so glad it worked, but it was really rough...

Oh, I could hear Thorin's voice so clearly then!

It's the word "sister-sons" that did it, I bet! :) It's such a wonderfully medieval term...

Meep, Gimli!!!

Gimli gets more lines in the next chapter! He's just a kid, really, and I feel so sure he's always hero-worshipped Fili and Kili (and they used to prank him and get him in lots of trouble...)

*giggles so much* Bilbo... *hearts him again*Bilbo is starting to think his choice of in-laws might not be the best

Lovely chapter and i enjoyed all the action scenes, and Thorin protecting Bilbo and getting called idiot for his trouble. That's so perfect for them.

I DO so love characters who take ridiculous risks to save each other and end up getting berated for it. :)

Thorin is dubious about that ring! He is starting to have his suspicions, I think... (as is Thrain, unfortunately!)

He had two of his spies following me, but--" She smiled, "--I went to visit Mother's tomb and lost them in the catacombs."

"I will return to the party and keep an eye on Thráin," said Dís. She reached into a pocket and pulled out a small key. "The key to the king's chambers. I took it from him when he embraced me in welcome."
Thorin took it from her and raised an eyebrow. "You have learned some...unorthodox skills in my absence, sister."
"Indeed," she said. She smiled and reached out to tug his beard lightly, as she had as a child. "Go with Mahal's luck and my love, my brother."
:D Nice dialogue.

"I'm sorry," whispered Bilbo. "But...Khazad-dûm was like a grave, dead and gone. This place…it lives. It breathes."

"For guarding your king?" Thorin stepped forward and clasped both their shoulders. "There is no apology needed."

Dis and Thorin are so fun to write together! She doesn't take him as seriously as most people, and that's always fun to write...

There was a lot of action in this chapter, and I usually find that really hard to write, but it went really smoothly, so yay! Thank YOU so much for the wonderful comment, I always love knowing what makes you smile (or worry!)

Oh yes, this was a very AWESOME chapter indeed. The only thing that saddens me is that there only a few chapters left in this wonderful story.

I know, only two more! *sobs a little* There's still a lot of loose ends, though--ones that will take a second series to explore, I think. *hides maps and timelines behind her back*

Yesss! *dances* That Ring needs to get dealt with in some way, after all... :) And with Thorin on the job and worrying about Bilbo's safety, things are bound to go slightly differently!
