Let's Talk January: The Upcoming Superbat Movie!

Jan 03, 2014 19:20

mishagirl asked about my opinions about the upcoming "Superman versus Batman" (I believe it's been stated that is not the title) movie. I haven't said much about it, mostly because my thoughts are so very conflicted, but I shall try to tease them out a bit here ( Read more... )

In short: great (if slightly inexplicable in the case of Affleck) cast, nervous about the tone and direction, happy it's being made at all. :)

That's pretty much how I feel about it, too. :)

The fact that they keep stressing a Milleresque feeling to the project makes me uneasy, but I can take a fair amount of punchy-punchy and growling in the middle as long as it ends with at least respect between the two.

TheY've really gone out of their way to stress that the tone will be like the Millerverse and that's so far the thing I hate most about the project. I think it would have bee a better idea to go a different direction, because the Nolan-verse is also still fresh in moviegoers minds and I think a different tone might have helped setting them apart a bit for non-comic-fans. But we'll see.

I have terribly mixed feelings about Diana being in it, although I think the casting of Gal Gadot looks excellent. I hate the idea of her being overshadowed by Clark and Bruce, and I dread seeing people ragging on Clark and Bruce's characters if ( ... )

Sooooooo agreed! With such similar tones and directing styles, it's going to be jarring to see someone other than Bale in the role, I think...

Please, please, please let them at least keep a romance out of it. If there MUST be one, I'd rather it were Bruce/Diana rather than some tangled-up triangle. But really, I would SO rather Diana get to be her own character and stand on her own, I feel it would be doing her such a grave disservice.

I agree with your observations. The thought of a Milleresque tone makes my lip curl.

Diana's going to be in it? They'll marginalize her character and claim that's why she can't have a movie of her own. Funny how TV could pull it off depicting her with grace and dignity 39 years ago but the movies can't figure out a way.

For me, it's going to be tough to see anyone but Christian in the role. And this older/younger stuff is being played up in the Batman/Superman title. Odd way of going about it, since Superman is the first hero in comics canon, but they've fooled around with his franchise so long people think of the Nolanverse Batman as first.

I would love for the movie to do well but I won't hold my breath. At least FINALLY these two beloved characters will be on-screen together.

*wonders if I'll live long enough to EVER see a Wonder Woman movie*

Sorry, I'm in a bitchy mood today.

I really fear you might be right about Diana in this movie! Marginalize her and then claim she was the reason it failed...however, the actress does seem pretty cool!

And yeah, I winced a bit when I saw them very clearly stating in the Batman/Superman title that Bruce is notably older than Clark. Not in my canon!

The topic does tend to make me a bit bitchy as well, it can be hard to keep my equilibrium about it!

This is what I live in fear of: the film not doing well, and then studio execs going "Well, it didn't do well because we put Wonder Woman in it, see? We told you she wasn't bankable!" when I guarantee you if it doesn't do well that is -not- going to be the problem with it.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Affleck. Not so much about the tone and the writing.

Yes, exactly. I don't want to see Diana scapegoated for the failure of yet another gritty, broody Superman film.

Affleck + good writing doesn't worry me! Anyone + bad writing is a problem, though...

You've summed up pretty much all of my own feelings here! I'm glad it's happening but... I'm quite worried at the same time. :/

I know...so, so conflicted! I don't want it to become the Titanic that sinks any chance of a Wonder Woman movie... *bites nails*

I agree that bringing in Diana only for a romance angle would be a HUGE disservice to her character. That's not who she is at all. She's a warrior first and foremost. Any romance takes a backseat to her mission to help her fellow women.

So, so, SO agreed. It would be such a colossal screw up, and just...who even knows with DC sometimes...
