This was perfect! The references to the canon - loved it! And the speech John gave Lestrade - priceless, I laughed. aaaand the delirious ramblings, just on the right side of heart-wrenching. Such a good job.

Thank you so much! I wasn't sure exactly when this was set, and then when I realized he'd be chewing out Lestrade it kind of clinked as a chance for him to realize he'd forgiven Sherlock himself, and the rest of it fell into place around it. It was wayyyy too much fun to put in all those little winks to canon, too--I love the original and its unabashed lunatic h/c, so it was a blast. :)

What a lovely fic! :) The Adventure of the Dying Detective is one of my favorites stories, though I'm not that much of a fan of ACD books. Love all the nods to the canon, and John's suspiciousness at first made me smile:

Sherlock laughed, a sharp bark. "Forgive me, John, but I need someone who has a good grasp of rare diseases, and you are not that person. Let me prove my point: what do you know of Rockhill's Disease? Or Andimeshk Fever?"

John pursed his lips. "I've never heard of them."

"Exactly. And what I suffer from now is more obscure than either of them, a disease so rare that--what are you doing?"

John had his cell phone out. "There isn't a single hit in Google for either of them, Sherlock."

"Well--" Sherlock seemed for a moment nonplussed; he made an angry huffing noise like an annoyed cat. "I said they were obscure."

"The Adventure of the Dying Detective" is SUCH a fun story: Holmes and his completely-unconvincing delirium, Watson's worry and fretting and being forced to sit there and listen to him ramble (ACD obviously wanted to write some h/c!), Holmes stuffing him behind the bed, just...all of it. :) So it was a really fun challenge to "translate" it into more modern terms--hee, the moment when I realized John would just Google any crazy disease Sherlock came up with made me giggle, I'm glad you liked it too. Thanks for letting me know!

It kind of hurt watching Sherlock string John along, especially set after John's already seen him die once, but of course you made the resolution oh so worth it!

I love that Lestrade's reaction to John's epic speech at him is mostly of the smug grin variety, I could picture that so perfectly. And his gentle teasing about John coming out of the closet! *grin* No lie, as much as I love the two main characters, I think Lestrade is my favorite on this show

Before the police could respond, John stepped forward and sent him staggering back with a neat right hook to the jaw. "Don't call him a fake," he added for good measure.

Lestrade, eeeee. I love writing him, he's so...rumpled and sighing and bemusedly amused by these two. :) Anytime he shows up in a story I'm delighted. *grin*

Also, John slugging baddies: a constant joy to write.

His eye fell on the skull grinning from the drawers; beside it was a beige USB stick in an small, open box. John idly picked it up. It was one of the ones that retracted, and he went to click it open

Hee! In the original story Watson just kind of has to take Holmes at his word, and then I remembered John would have his phone, lol...

Oh! Oh, that on the re-read! *wibbles a bit* *pets Sherlock*

Ahhh, that moment in the original totally grabbed me, this horrible moment when he realizes he could have cost Watson his life. It's...such a fanficcy moment already that it was easy to adapt!

Lestrade was so much fun to write! He was vastly amused (and relieved) by John's speech...

Mmmm, John punching bad people is a delicious thought, somehow. He hasn't gotten enough punching in yet! Here's hoping for John-punches (other than Sherlock) in Series three!

*cracks up laughing* I have ruined my own fic with the fic! :D I would have gone with the actual ones Holmes uses in the original, but I knew they'd have a ton of hits (in our world, though not in John's) and I did want them to be truly non-existent...

I wouldn't say you ruined it! After all, if John posted that case to his blog, there would be hits, too. It was just so funny, how Sherlock delivers these dangerous sounding illnesses, that John has never heard of, and John googles them and nobody else has heard of them either...and before that part of the fic, I was torn between "Oh no-he's really sick and dying, John do something" and "Oh, it must be a rewrite of 'The Adventure of the Dying Detective'". I didn't read your notes, so until that point was feeling very angsty, and then I was just laughing.

Oh, that's pretty much perfect! *grin* "Oh no, this is so sad and I'm so worried, and...WAIT A MINUTE, this is that story, isn't it?"

The original story is so hilariously fanficcy already (I am convinced ACD just wanted to write some h/c and put John through the wringer, the "case" is so utterly slight and pro forma!) that it was extra-fun to adapt it. :)
