Missive from Non-Fandom-Land

Sorry I haven't been around much, but for the last ten days I've been shopping from 11 in the morning until 8 at night. My husband's former debate coach is visiting with his thirteen year old daughter, and all she wants to do, all day every day, is shop. She has dreamed of hitting the Lolita stores of Harajuku for months now and falls into despair ( Read more... )

Oh, BLESS YOUR HEART for being so understanding and kind to that young lass. I've been hearing a lot of utter crap recently from certain people around my age (ie early thirties) who seem to have no respect for the current lot of teenagers at all, despite the fact that I can remember most of these grouchy gits when they were all nineteen or so and know they were just the same back then as the kids they're whining about now. That kind of selective memory in adults really irritates me - so it's awesome to see someone NOT doing that and instead being supportive to a kid who, by the sounds of it, really appreciates it. Especially when it's such a strain on you. You have my sympathy AND my admiration! *bows*

Yeah, exactly! I was just super-lucky that the Internet didn't exist in its current form when I was thirteen, or there would be a lot of really clear reminders about it, lol. And she was so appreciative and really enjoyed herself--she wants to come back and maybe next time she does the history and culture will be more her thing! If fashion is the hook that gets her interested in the rest of the world I think it's cool. Though I'm really enjoying NOT shopping for a few days. *grin*

i wish i had a adult figure like you in my life. It sounds like she is having lots of fun and you are such an angel for letting yourself be dragged around shopping. I hate shopping too, but i think that is more of being in the sterilized standardized malls in america than anything else. I become a shopaholic when i'm back in Taiwan.
you are awesome and i've been following your stuff since i was in my mid teens so i guess you were indirectly one of those people i thought might "get" me. i would always read posts about your life though and extrapolated that you were probably older than me so i rarely ever posted anything to say hello.

I have to admit, even though it isn't my style, shopping in Harajuku for crazy frilly stuff was a LOT more fun than poking around some Old Navy or Banana Republic for a pair of jeans and a tank top. :)

I think one of the things I love about the Internet is it gives me a chance to see things from so many points of view--I've got so many people on my flist from around the world, and so many different ages, and it really helps keep me from getting too blinkered, you know? So many awesome people out there...

Haha, I know what you mean! I do like the aesthetic (I have a love for Victorian and Victorian inspired things), but so many of my friends are obsessed with it and that's all they can talk about sometimes. You're a wonderful person to be nice to this girl and I hope you got to have some fun too, maybe not the shopping part but maybe you got to go eat some yummy food or something :D

Also, this strongly reminds me of the part in the Superman: Apocalypse animated movie where Clark took Kara shopping, the look on his poor face the entire time!! XD And it makes me want to draw Clark in a lolita costume >.>

I wish I could introduce your friends to this kid, she's so well-meaning and I think she feels pretty isolated sometimes in a mainstream American school. (She's just moved across the country and is about to start school in a new place, which I think is a big source of the shopping anxiety).

And it makes me want to draw Clark in a lolita costume >.>

Oh man, I support this impulse big time, lol. Poor, poor Clark. Undercover at a cosplay convention, perhaps?

...

That actually would be a really awesome basis for a story, lol. *facepal,*

To be honest, knowing I could put a funny spin on it was a big reason why I posted. *grin* So I'm glad I made you giggle!
