Action Comics #8:  Written by GRANT MORRISON;  Pencils by RAGS MORALES

So the first arc of the new Action Comics came to an end in a general satisfying if somewhat predictable fashion:  a big showdown between Brainiac and Metal-0, the saving of Metropolis.  There are a couple of neat little additions:  I rather like the idea of Superman's first ( Read more... )

(although the next issue, #9, makes up for that with a bang as it re-introduces the multiverse and shows us a world where Superman was created by idealistic dreamers who then sold the idea to a giant corporation and watched in horror as their beautiful idea was turned into a banal, vulgar corporate brand to make money).

And this is why I love Grant Morrison. Seriously, this makes me want to track him down right now and hug him.

IMHO, Morrison does some of the very best meta--clear without being incredibly heavy-handed. I'm really looking forward to Batman Inc. starting up again this month--he drew some really amazing parallels between Alzheimer's and storytelling and mysteries in the last arc.

I rather like the idea of Superman's first Fortress of Solitude being in space, where he guards the miniaturized cities that he saved.
I loved that! And that panel with Superman looking down on Earth from his Fortress of Solitude - I always so love to see Clark like that. :)

unless Superman is being heroic and handsome
“heroic and handsome”- I agree! :)

Okay, mostly I just really love how Superman looks when he says "You're barely a man!" up there. Morales isn't my favorite Superman artist, but that's a nice panel.I admit, Morales really surprised me. He is not my favorite artist either and I usually complain about the way he draws Clark. This time... he did really a good job though. And yes, Clark looks great in that panel (and so young, IMO ( ... )

I was a little unhappy to have him speaking Kryptonian at the very end, because I was afraid people would take that as him abandoning humanity, but I don't think he is at all! I'll be anxious to see him again when Action goes back to covering him...

And yes, Morales usually had maybe one or two panels per book that I really loved, even though a lot of times I didn't like his art!

And yes, I really liked the end with Lois asking about needing to be alone, and seeing him fly (while smiling!) But the art was so surprisingly different that it really threw me off--even though I didn't always like Morales, I wish he could have finished the book...
