New Frontier Special (2004)

Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier is a retelling of the beginnings of the DCU set during the Cold War 1950s.  It's a great read, augmented by Cooke's beautiful art, but there isn't a great deal of focus on Superman or Batman in it.  However, it does have one little gem:  early on in the book, we find out that Superman tried to arrest Batman in the ( Read more... )

As a Clark/Superman lover, I don't enjoy to see Bruce hurting my boy. Not a fan of that fight, no. I wouldn't have forgiven so easily as Kal does. lol
Thanks for the scans!

Cool scans!
the amazing details of the second and third panel, showing Bruce and Clark in their civilian lives contemplating the news

Oh, wow, I agree!

I'm working on a story with Faraday in it, so I've been reading a lot of stuff with him and this is interesting too. I'm not going with this version of him, but instead the other slightly different version, but it's interesting to see him here. Thanks for the read!

Ooooh, really? That's great! He deserves more fic time. :) I keep hoping he'll fit a story of mine, but he just sort of lurks in the background and refuses to actually emerge...

Yeah! It's Bat/Cat, and kind of fits in with like, The Lazarus Affair? In a way. :) I'm excited but nervous about getting him to ring true. He's a cool character.

Thanks for posting :)

Question... who's the guy lurking in the background of three of the panels?

Number 3... 25.... and then 33. My guess for 33 is Clark; 25 might be Alfred but I'm really not sure.

I'm pretty sure they're all different people, actually! #3 is probably King Faraday, who's the government agent in "New Frontier." 25 is probably Alfred (there aren't really any other options at this point), and I think Clark is the one in 33 (guessing from the glasses and the fact that the panels are of Paradise Island, Gotham, and Metropolis...)

Oh and Mr. Wayne, my thanks for allowing us to hold our summing aboard your ship.
OMG! This made me chuckle.

I can’t help but wonder... Who is the hunter here.
Good question. :D

FOLLOW YOUR HEART, KAL.
Diana was so awesome in this scene!

Wow - the moment Bruce revealed himself - and Clark’s reaction - that was amazing!

I love that page so much. Not just Diana's assessment of Clark and Bruce's personalities, which is nice, but the amazing details of the second and third panel, showing Bruce and Clark in their civilian lives contemplating the news.
I loved this as well (especially Diana’s thoughts about Clark (Kal)) and his strength of character.

And Diana smiling makes a nice contrast to serious faces of Bruce and Clark in the last panel. :)

Awesome story! (Finding out the story "May the best man win" is based on these scans, I went to read them first.) Thanks for sharing. :)

Doesn't it? I have to say they don't look so thrilled to be working together yet. :) They'll get there!

Isn't that moment with Bruce standing on the yacht so hilarious? He's so manipulative in all the best ways...

Diana in New Frontier is so, so wonderful! The best Diana ever, I think...and she's so close to Clark (Cooke clearly ships Diana/Kal, they even get a kiss...not my favorite pair but he makes it work) and respects Bruce so much...

Have I mentioned how much I adore your scan posts? I've always liked comics, but I've been accepted as a true comics geek thanks to my ability to describe your posts. "Oh, yes, in the early years Clark and Bruce were the best of friends, until Miller published his groundbreaking blah bah blah."

On a completely unrelated note, I seem to have started a fanfic set in your "Music of the Spheres" universe. I assure you, this was in no way intentional. Would you be interested in seeing it, and/or may I post it to the World's Finest community (with proper credit, of course)?

Hee, I'm glad you enjoy the scans! I confess in part I do it because I wish I'd had something like that (I found scans_daily kind of scary) that would help me get my bearings...there's SO MUCH out there and I'm still completely at sea about most of it (don't ask me about Brightest Day!) but I figured I could get the hang of the history of the relationship of two characters. Actually, I'm still working on that one...

Also, ooooooh, a MotS-set story? I'd love to see it, either before or when you post it--I don't need to see it before because I wouldn't want to imply you need my permission to post it or anything. ^-^ It's all fanfic, after all! But I'm definitely curious! I'm just finishing up another one-shot this week and starting to contemplate a longer arc myself...
