I think 'Jesse James' was marketed wrong. It was more like Unforgiven, a deconstruction of the Western than it was shown in the commercials. I'm still glad I watched it, even if its bleak message was severely depressing.
3:10 to Yuma was a LOT more fun and in the vein of more well-known westerns, like the Clint Eastwood 'Man with No Name' trilogy. Charlie Prince (the fey little cowboy with the great outfit) is one of my FAVORITE characters now.

One thing about the films of the seventies--at least in contrast to those today--they were a lot more interested in taking chances and in portraying real life than watering things down. The movie portrays a woman who doesn't want the crummy hardscrabble life she had for her daughters, and it starts with her objecting to her 13-year-old daughter marrying some farm-tard kid.
I won't say it's a piece of cinematic brilliance or anything like that, but for strong female characters you could do a lot worse. It just sucks that the rare one you find turns out to be the villain.
