Phew!

Just watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I might do a write-up, but it's fairly cut and dry--this was a good movie, and Jesse James is assassinated by Robert Ford. The journey is the destination in this one, with lots of character development ( Read more... )

Yes, yes you would.

I think 'Jesse James' was marketed wrong. It was more like Unforgiven, a deconstruction of the Western than it was shown in the commercials. I'm still glad I watched it, even if its bleak message was severely depressing.

3:10 to Yuma was a LOT more fun and in the vein of more well-known westerns, like the Clint Eastwood 'Man with No Name' trilogy. Charlie Prince (the fey little cowboy with the great outfit) is one of my FAVORITE characters now.

It was marketed more like. . . hm. . . an Oscar contender that EVERYONE would like, part 'dissective triumph of the human spirit' and part crowd-pleaser. I think if they'd sold it more like No Country, or even like Requiem for a Dream, that it was an examination of madness and perception vs reality (the conflict being James's legend vs his basically being a depressed sociopath) it would have done better.

Ugh. Well, you'll see what you want to see I guess. If you're a right-wing nut you'll see left wing politics. I'm not sure what bias this person is talking about, unless they consider their narrow Christian worldview to be the majority held by all Americans-- oh wait.

One thing about the films of the seventies--at least in contrast to those today--they were a lot more interested in taking chances and in portraying real life than watering things down. The movie portrays a woman who doesn't want the crummy hardscrabble life she had for her daughters, and it starts with her objecting to her 13-year-old daughter marrying some farm-tard kid.

I won't say it's a piece of cinematic brilliance or anything like that, but for strong female characters you could do a lot worse. It just sucks that the rare one you find turns out to be the villain.
