Yeah, see, I've been in these jobs for a couple years that I just didn't give a flying crap about. So I let my focus muscle get out of shape. Now I need it again. I'm contracting for a great company and dammit I want the conversion, and I need to train that shit up in a hurry. So what do I do, besides feed myself crappy food?

Luckily, I only need to be at about 70% to do the job. I can write some code, test a bit, read slashdot, write some code, etc. I haven't had to go into deep focus mode at all.

Which is kind of why I hate the job and am (informally) looking for something else.

If movies are any indication, you can just give a stern talking to to your reflection in the mirror every morning.

Just don't get mean about it to the point where you go all "Full Metal Jacket" or something.

Instead of forcing yourself to work on something - doing things like "I'm going to work on this for 10 minutes straight" - try doing things like "I'm only going to work on this for 2 hours". But, more generally, I've found that setting countdown timers can be a useful tool for jumpstarting productivity.
