Dear gods this entire post is made of metaquotey-goodness. And yes, how oh how does this happen to you?

My best theory is sort of a long story. I grew up hanging out at a volunteer non-profit radio station, so my definition of "normal human interaction" included things like impromptu drum lessons and Vietnam vets telling nine-year-olds about that time the chopper blew up. (though not at the same time ( ... )

It happens to me. All the time. I wonder what would happen if we were hanging out.

Seriously. The amount of little old ladies I've picked lipsticks for in Walgreens is amazing.

If we were hanging out our Vortices of Strangeness would combine and produce something even more inexplicable. We must try it someday.

Usually I don't get makeup ladies, I get.. oh, see above comment.

Oh yeah. Growing up taking the subway I am a freak magnet. One time a guy started telling me that in his country it would be perfectly okay for a guy as old as him to marry a girl like me. His two kids were with him. I got war stories, ex wife stories, no-good man stories, bad kid stories... I don't get it.

I like it when strangers tell me stories!

Or when people I know tell me stories.

Or when.. I just like stories.

Ah yes, the distant cousin of the "You Look Like You Work Here" scenario, which used to happen to me quite often until I got tired of people asking me what aisle things were on and I stopped wearing my work outfits to the supermarket.

Did this lady think you were an employee or was she just stark raving mad?

I just look helpful, I think. I get asked for directions a lot too.

Interestingly, Foundation Lady was uniformed - a maroon set of hospital scrubs.

By the way... to completely change the subject and prove how I found your journal in the first place... I still can't add tags to that early 80s downtown Tampa picture you have on Flickr.

Huh, I didn't know I had 'em linked in any way.

As for the photo - I swear, I set permissions all over my account so anyone can add tags. And if I find any more interesting Old Tampa photos, I'll post them. (mostly stuff from that era is me falling over and looking vacant while being very short, which is unlike the present how?)
