When fandoms collide

Sep 04, 2006 21:05

I have a fic to post here and it's a departure for me. While Smallville remains one of my true obsessions, I've recently discovered Due South -- both the show and the fandom, thanks to my pusher... dear friend and beta, Diluvian. When this woman pimps something, look out. She's a powerhouse....

The story below combines both of my fandoms, ( Read more... )

Great work! I'll be reading the rest of the story in a minute but I just had to share my joy over Constables James, Fenimore and Cooper. I'll be smiling at the thought of them along the way! ;-)

Christina's appearence also made me smile, I wish people used her more.

While Lex sincerely doubted the Inspector's experience with Christina had included skinny-dipping, false ID's, and dancing until dawn in a leather bar, all things were possible.

Christina is such a scamp. mistressace July 4 2007, 21:37:52 UTC
She also reminded me slightly of Victoria -- similar coloring and long, dark hair. With a pair of heels she's just the right height to throw Fraser for a momentary loop.

She's also just reckless enough to fit into Lex's profilgate youth. With her father being the Trade Minister of Canada, it's not too far of a stretch for her and Lex to have met, or for Lex to be stuck as her companion during a visit to Metropolis, However, unlike Fraser, Lex was more than happy to indulge Christina in her search for the wild life.

The names for Fraser's underlings presented themselves as I was writing. I already had Cooper in mind and the other two simply showed up, insisting that they be included. Wish I could have used Turnbull in this story, but he's off being a politician these days.

Thank you for commenting on this story and I do apologize for the delay in my reply. RL has a way of overwhelming fandom for months at a time, but I think I've wrestled the beast into submission for the moment.

I'm so happy you enjoyed the story.

Hugs,

I've already told you how much I love this. I shall say it again but I'm really commenting because I noticed
Perhaps there would be time to discuss the impact another fertilizer plant would have on the Fraser's delicate ecosystem.
I'm fairly sure there's a mistake there. Otherwise, magnificent.

I'll be answering the other one this evening, but this one needed a reply right away. The possible mistake you pointed out actually isn't one because the main waterway that runs through Vancouver is the Fraser River. That certainly was a surprise to me. Until I started researching this fic, I always thought Vancouver had been built on the banks of the Columbia. Google proved me wrong.

And Fraser being Fraser woudn't think of it as the Fraser River because he's much less significant that the waterway. To him, it would simply be the Fraser. Therein lies the dilemma.

Thank you for letting me know about the speed-bump. I'm thinking about a possible fix for it.

I wanted to let you know that I also had a little moment of huh..? over the line lucifercircle mentioned. I understand and agree with what your saying about Fraser's mentality, he knows what the river is called and would phrase it like that, but it is a little confusing for the uneducated.

But whatever you decide, it's a great story! :-)

I did wrestle with the whole issue of the Fraser River vs. Fraser himself and was unsure of how to handle it until it occurred to me that Fraser himself wouldn't have a problem with it. As that portion of the story is from his POV, I let the character make the decision.

It still gives me a momentary speed-bump but I hope it does not detract the reader from thr story itself.

I'm so glad you enjoyed my first attempt at Due South. I love the show and the fandom so much that I just had to dip my feet in the waters, as it were.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I can only plead that RL has had me in a stranglehold for months and I've just now managed to fight my way free.

The flirting was fun to write. mistressace July 4 2007, 22:05:06 UTC
Lex is such an outrageous flirt to begin with that it was easy to write his sections. Benton is a little stiffer, but he eventually caught a clue and decided to play along.

Lex's reaction to Fraser being shot was so perfectly in character that it needed no editing. I've seen that look on his face in canon so many times -- whenever Clark has rescued him, Lex has this moment of hero worship, a shining second of belief that gets crushed by Clark's lies.

Benton's a better match for Lex, I think. He's just as much a hero as Clark, but he has no reason to lie about it. Nor does he have the capacity to do so.

Thank you so much for reading the story and commenting. I truly appreciate it.

I also apologize for the delay in my replay. RL can be such a bear at times.

This is just delightful! Loved seeing Christina in this, a really nice touch. And I have to say the Fraser river line didn't confuse me in the least (and yes, I am Canadian).

Christina is one of my favorite one-shot characters from Due South and I was delighted when this story presented a chance to write about her. She's a breath of fresh air that Fraser needs every once in a while to show him that life does not have to always be about struggle and sacrifice.

Discovering that the Fraser River is the main waterway through Vancouver has me laughing. I knew that the river existed (Stan Rogers fan here), but I wasn't sure where it actually was. I'm very happy to hear that the inclusion of the Fraser worked for my Canadian readers.

Thank you for reading this story and for commenting. I do appreciate hearing when a story of mine strikes a chord with one of its readers.

Sorry for the delay in my reply -- RL and I had an argument and RL won for a very long time.

Pardon my obtuseness, but who's RL?

Mine, unfortunately. mistressace July 4 2007, 22:45:02 UTC
RL (real life) bogs me down on occasion. It keeps me far too busy and I end up missing so much in fandom due to it.

YAY and HOORAY! I love your Smallville stories and I am SO excited to see you writing in another fandom that I adore beyond all reason...

Hey! Welcome to the Madhouse! mistressace July 4 2007, 22:42:44 UTC
It's always nice to see a new face in here. Pull up a chair, or a convenient muse who doesn't have someone else in his lap, and stay a while. I don't post very often, but I do try to make it interesting when I do.

I'm so glad you liked A Man of Justice. It was a grueling few weeks of struggle working with the new characters, but I think it turned out fairly well. The character I enjoyed the most was Ray Kowalski, he was a kick to write once I got over my concern that I couldn't do his quixotic nature justice.

Thank you for reading my Smallville work and for following me into Due South I shall endeavor not to disappoint.

Hugs,

Ace

PS: I love your icon!

Thank you for your welcome!

And, oh me, oh my, if you could bring yourself to write more Ray Kowalski, my day would be made for WEEKS. He might be my favorite character of...well...ever. Though Lex Luthor held that title for a LONG time, and I was fascinated to see you slip him in to Due South. I would not have thought that could be done!

As for the delicious icon, I love it because it completely encapsulates the show in one tiny little drawing (well, with a bit more kissing, but not much). We have the talented pentapus to thank for it.

More of Ray Kowalski? mistressace July 4 2007, 23:27:25 UTC
I think I can manage that. He is definitely one of my favorite characters of all time. Benton is pretty and he has a very nice singing voice, but it was Ray Kowalski who got me hooked on Due South in the first place. He's so tough on the outside and yet so vulnerable, almost child-like, on the inside.

Callum Keith Rennie created an amazing portrayal of a very complex man and I think I love him for it. He ranks right up there with Michael Rosenbaum as an actor.

I wasn't sure that I could make Lex work in the Due South universe but he does. He's just the right amount of lost for Fraser to take notice and make it his duty to help save/reform Lex.

There was so a kiss in Due South! An underwater kiss, but still a kiss nonetheless....

Ace
