Turkey Superlatives, continued...

Most beautiful building we visited: A toss-up between the eighteenth-century Ismail Pasha Palace in Doğubeyazıt (you were right about that one, mitzimaybe!) and the thirteenth-century Great Mosque in Divriği, both monochrome yellowish buildings with elaborate carvings instead of the more common coloured tiles. As much as I ( Read more... )

Thanks. :-) With hindsight the bike ride was a phenomenally bad idea, not so much because of the weather as because of the bikes. K and I realised they were bad bikes within five minutes of getting on them, but we still went on cycling. I'll never make that mistake again. I learnt that much during this holiday.

We were allowed to enter a good many mosques. Unless the mosque or mausoleum is particularly holy, non-Muslims are usually allowed to enter, as long as they're decently dressed and they cover their heads and take off their shoes. It's like that in most Islamic countries.

You do such great photo essays! I love reading about it all as much as I love seeing it all!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy this format. That said, I have to admit I'm looking forward to doing something less "involved" again -- just photos, or just text entries. Once I've finished my travel reports, this journal will probably be photos-only for a while. :-)

eric and i had a similarly bad biking experience in vang vieng, where we rented bikes to get to some nearby caves on a blistering hot day and then got stuck in a downpour. we hired a tractor-pull tuk-tuk (probably has a different name) to get back to the town.

i love reading these stories of our travels.

Ouch. That sounds unpleasant. I kind of wish I had hired a bike whilst in Vang Vieng, but perhaps it was just as well I didn't. :-)

I'm glad you're enjoying the stories. I'm curious to see how you'll respond to tomorrow's batch. They're... interesting.

Well it looks like all the time spent taking pictures of leaves was worth it. Look forward to the black and whites.

Funny, the bikes don't look evil. I would never even consider biking anywhere in that weather. If the thermometer goes over 100, I ain't movin' without mechanical assistance.

Didn't have the time to tell you earlier -- I really like the leaf picture.

It was definitely worth it. Oh, well, or it seems like, -- from my point of view. :-)

Thank you! I really appreciate your taking the time to tell me so. :-)

I think I can safely guarantee there will be more leaf pictures, only in black and white this time. I'll probably start working on them in a week or two.
