U Bein's bridge (part 2)

In which I veer perilously close to pictorialism...

The bridge from yesterday's post, just before sunset. Sadly, I missed the actual sunset because I had to get back to Mandalay.

What have you got against pictorialism? As opposed to what, anyway? Photo journalism?

I resisted the urge to make it bright pink
AND the urge to make it square. You're really bossing your urges today, aren't you? ;-)

BTW lovely pic!

I have nothing against pictorialism. In fact, I'd say most of my photos veer perilously close to pictorialism, and I like them that way. But this... I don't know, it strikes me as a little too postcard-like. Although in a real postcard that sky probably would have looked a bit pinker. :-)

I would like to move away from holiday snapshots a little. I yearn to do something artistic, something bold. I want to work with people. I want to move away from just pretty pictures. But it's awfully hard, I find.

As for resisting the urge to make it square, don't think I didn't try! My first impulse was very much to make it square. I thought it looked better this way, though. But it hurts, oh, it hurts not to post anything square today... I feel quite neglectful.

Thanks! :-)

Head over immediately to British photographer Stephen Gill's wonderful website www.stephengill.co.uk! It contains all the lovely ingredients for your delight, especially the Hackney Wick portfolio: instead of "postcards" you'll find "family album shots" charm, done with a 50 pence toy camera, and... the pictures are all square.

Since last Saturday I'm the happy owner of a personally signed copy of this marvel of a photo book.

Oh, and, yes, Gill's work IS art.

No offence, but I think I might just prefer the postcards. Gill has some interesting work on his site (I like the Hackney Flowers series -- lovely idea, that), but for the most part, it looks very snapshot-ish to me. I can see why you like it (it's very much your style), but to me, it's a little too Eggleston-like. And you know how I feel about Eggleston. :-)

Meanwhile, I'm having fun with my own ridiculously overpriced toy camera. Whether it results in anything artistic remains to be seen, but I do like playing with my new toy. Multiple exposures... oh, yes. I'm in love!

Yep, it's lyrical and pictorial. And a bit Kim Ki Duk-ish, if you ask me. Is that a bad thing?

Heh. You certainly know how to make a girl feel better, don't you? Kim Ki-duk-ish, indeed.

You KNOW you really wanted to make it bright pink; look at what you're listening to! :P

Tee hee! I swear I wasn't aware of it when I wrote those things, but you're right, there must have been a subliminal link somewhere. Very funny.

I like the purple tones. A refreshing change from the usual sunset pic :)

Thanks. I was sorely tempted to go for postcard hues, but managed to resist the urge. :-)
