One of my favourite places in Europe (although there will inevitably be those who'll argue it's not actually part of Europe)...

so nice to see you post again!
Those pictures are great. I can imagine doing a Vogue fashion shoot in there...an haute couture variation on the schoolgirl or something.

Merci, Olga. Actually, I can imagine that, too. It's amazing I never saw anything like it when I was living in Cambridge!

PS: Speaking of black-and-white pictures, it just occurred that there's an Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition in Amsterdam at the moment. I haven't seen it myself, but I've heard great things about it. If you're at all bored during your stay in Amsterdam, that might be an interesting way to spend an afternoon. I could go with you if you want...

I want to bring those two young girls I saw at the MET the other day (and Olga, of course!) and photograph them here.

Heh. Believe it or not, but I was thinking of that photo when I edited this photo last night! I can completely see those girls standing between the pillars looking bored. Oh yes, I can. Bring them on! :-)

i like the crop, the bit of light on the right creates a bit of imbalance that makes the eye move. i also like the contrast between the heaviness of the stone and the lighter filigree of the iron work. nice pictue.

You mean you prefer the square prop, right? I think I prefer that one myself, but I'm not entirely sure, which is why I've posted both versions. Anyhow, thanks for your comment!

Just out of curiosity, how did you get here? I don't think we've met on LJ before...

Oh, dear mistress_elaine March 13 2006, 18:07:07 UTC
Crop, not prop. Aaargh.

yes, the square one. being square also emphasizes the solid heavy essence of the stone, verticality lightens it.

i did comment on one of your photos a while back, but under your gentle chiding, i just became less anonymous...although i am again at this moment since i can't remember where i put my password. i think i see your postings occasionally through cross posting on one friends list or another, i'm not really sure.

I looked at the gates and recognized right away before even reading the caption below. Ah, beautiful beautiful Cambridge. Thank you for posting this; Cambridge is so dear to my heart that it makes me very happy when I see photos of that charming town. :)

And, Trinity College remains my favourite. :)

:D

I prefer the square crop for this one. It immediately draws attention to the ornate gate.

I think I agree. It's amazing how often the square crop works for me.

Cheers! :-)

Yeah, I think anyone who's ever been to Nevile's Court would recognise this. I'm glad you did! As for Trinity being your favourite college, well, what can I say? You've got taste, girl! It's my favourite, as well, but then I'm biased, having been a Trinity student myself. I simply love Great Court, Nevile's Court and the Avenue. I wish I had more good photos of them.

What's your connection with Cambridge, other than appreciating it on an aesthetic level?

You should get flickr so I can leave irritating notes on your photographs with crop suggestions. :)

I am addicted to the square crop, as you might guess. However, I think the halving of the gate makes it lose a little something - if you go square, I would crop more to the left of the frame.

I may succumb to the mighty Flickr eventually. It seems all the cool kids are doing it, and my Photobucket account is about to expire, so I may look into getting my own Flickr account. I look forward to receiving your irritating notes. :-)

I'm completely addicted to the square crop these days. I swear two thirds of the photos I edit end up being square. And I'll always be grateful to you for introducing me to square photos. I see them popping up in other places now (alois does gorgeous square shots), but I'm fairly certain it was your square photos (Holga and non-Holga) which got me to look into the format in the first place. So, cheers!

As for this particular crop, my initial impulse was to crop it exactly how you describe it (i.e., more to the left of the frame), but I ended up preferring this crop. I don't know why; it just struck me as more balanced, despite the fact that part of the gate is missing. Thanks for your input, though -- I appreciate it!
