What's good about Austin? I haven't been there but it sounds intriguing. We are trying to figure out where to land next, once we leave NYC. The cost of living in the places I want are just too depressing.
I don't know that I can in good conscience recommend it because 1) part of my love for it is based on memories of 20 years ago and it has changed a lot and 2) Texas isn't for everybody.
Some stuff I love/loved about it: it used to feel very laid back and full of interesting people. You hear complaints that a lot of growth has diminished this. I also love the ubiquity of good Mexican food and the weather, but that's my own perversion. The summers are extremely hot.
They say it's gotten expensive but of course relative to NYC it isn't.
Where else have you lived? I've added so many people I'm not keeping track of details well.
Yeah, I'm not sure I'd care for Texas, despite all the good I've heard of Austin. It is apparently good financially for retirement, but that's not enough. Other than just passing through the only part I've spent any time in was San Antonio, and the only part of that I liked was the riverwalk. Once you poke your head up out of there it's like entering Hades. Besides NY I've lived in St Louis and other parts of Missouri, New Orleans and Covington La, a couple of places in Kentucky. St. Louis is where my family is but I loathe the place, and only ever lived there because of family. I do not want to retire there. Best possible scenario someone gives me money to buy a condo in NYC but that isn't happening :(
I like other parts of Texas but in a complicated way. The politics are obviously awful but they are almost everywhere--it's just a slightly different balance.
