While stuff may well be archived, that doesn't mean it's still accessible. Witness how bollocksed up the Digital Domesday Project was after less than 20 years.

The idea of altering ourselves to survive on other planets seems like a much less outlandish and crazy idea than terraforming. Something along the lines of the Ousters from the Hyperion books seem much more likely to me.
