Not Cool

Weird. It's happened a couple of times now, whilst DJing, that some random has offered me money to play a request. Obviously, I've turned them down and felt somewhat offended, for reasons I've taken a while to work out. I mean, lace your request with an offer of beer or whisky and we can talk. And then I realised. Look at it in a slightly ( Read more... )

We're talking notes, on both occasions I recall. At least one of the profferers was considerably under the influence. Unless, perhaps, it's a similar situation to the one you describe (and I've seen no evidence it has been), I just don't see how one song can make that much difference to your night...

Agreed - very weird and not at all cool. Interesting point re fancying people.

Never had that happen DJing (well, other than once when someone offered me a fiver to cut "Prince Charming" just after I'd started it because he hates it - but that was a joke).

What did they want, something horrendously inappropriate and off-genre, or just to shoehorn their way up the request list?

I've occasionally had people (including one of the club bouncers) trying to browbeat me into playing full-on Metal at Sheep (which I refused - I value my residency more than any amount of money[1] or pressure will overcome), but thus far no-one's attempted bribery.

[1] Well, OK, if someone delivers twenty million in used twenties[2], I might possibly agree to play Metallica. Just the once. Everyone had their price (and I could probably buy the entire Merrion Centre, Subculture included, with that)...

[2] Sterling, not Monopoly, before anyone gets any ideas! :-)

Something entirely appropriate, but which wasn't going to be played as (a) Simon had already played the same band for the same guy not long before, and (b) it just wouldn't have worked at that time of night.

I had £20 forced on me (despite every effort to turn it down) for playing Manson on Sunday night. It went straight into the "Save The Subculture" fund as otherwise I'd have felt... dirty and compromised.

Exactly! It takes all the romance out of the encounter.
