Even if I wasn't a huge Flaming Lips fan, I still think I'd find The Fearless Freaks pretty engrossing. One of my favorite parts is when Wayne Coyne and his oft-nude wife are preparing for Halloween. Wayne says, "I love Halloween and I love scaring those little kids. I remember, when I was a little kid, how much the being scared stuck with you. ( Read more... )

I was totally scared of Hansel and Gretel when I was a kid... but that's so obvious, child abandonment, cannibalism, witchcraft, shitty adults taking advantage of people, etc. The adults in the story are pretty terrible and untrustworthy. I'm sure it's supposed to be bringing a stranger danger self reliance lesson, but Jesus.

Also, when I was three I was scared of Fantastic Voyage. I thought people were living in my bloodstream. If you've ever had a drug induced get if off of me or get it out of me for something that's not separable from you, it was that. Only I was three, and really, I wasn't going to sober up. Ha ha.

I can't remember if we had that Time Life series or not, the ones that we had were fucking terrible.

I'm sure this series was terrible too, but those commercials were horrifying. After years of watching every horror flick in existence, I still can't watch those fucking ads without feeling like someone's sneaking up on me.

I have to say my mom was shit scared of all the America's Most Wanted stolen child things, but that was less pop culture and more because my brother was kidnapped by his dad (the non-custodial parent.) Neither of them will talk about it, my sister in law told me right around when she and my brother got married, and she was dragging me around for all the associated chick things. (That sounds bad, she's actually really fun to hang out with, but I was pretty much feeling like I'd rather go to a bachelor party than the lady pre-wedding festivities.)

I was screaming & sobbing so much that my mom had to take me out of the theater while watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. Christopher Lloyd's creepy eyeballs totally freaked me out, but what was worse was the chemical "dip" that erased all those unlucky innocent cartoon characters. Don't think I don't think about this from time to time whilst making dipped cones.

Funny, I just found my old VHS tape of that while going through all my stuff. I was 10 when it came out and I loved it. LOVED it. It was wild and violent and made classic cartoon realms collide and had jokes about wieners. It was my very favorite thing in those years between the Muppets and the Simpsons. I almost never watch it now, but last time I did I thought it held up pretty well.

Christopher Lloyd melting that poor, adorable little shoe guy though-- that was fucking disturbing.

I didn't see anyone mention it in that article's thousands of comments, but my little brother had nightmares because of the scary old man in Garfield's Halloween special.
