The Man Trap: So a monster has taken the form of your ex-girlfriend. She's about to kill your Captain and your friend. And you hesitate to fire the phaser in your hand. Yeah, right. I think there ( Read more... )

Balance Of Terror is my all-time favourite, too. But I think I like yours even better ;)

Hah -- I just realized one more part of Spock's conflict -- he's hot for Kirk, but Kirk and the Romulan clearly are soulmates -- they have such a deep understanding of one another before they even have a chance to talk! Damn you Kirk! Damn you Romulan Commander! You never understood me! me! ME! DIE! DIE!

For a long time I considered Balance of Terror my favorite, at other times City on the Edge of Forever, or even trouble with tribbles.

But, deep in my heart, I think my true favorite is Bread and Circuses. It epitomizes the lengths star trek writers would go to toss plausability out the window in pursuit of a good story.

"Tonight, James Kirk, I am your slave."

My favorite thing about Balance of Terror is that the first war against the Romulans was fought in the Golden Age of Radio, before they had them new-fangled televisual devices.

Although it's certainly possible that, at the time, the Romulans didn't wish to give away their connection to the Vulcans, so they simply chose not to broadcast video:
"As you may recall, this conflict was fought, by standards today, with primitive atomic weapons and in primitive space vessels which allowed no quarter, no captives, nor was there even ship-to-ship visual communication. Therefore, no human, Romulan, or ally has ever seen the other."
