Gout seems a lot more prevalent than it used to be. You're at least the fifth person I know with it.

I am very sympathetic to the pain you endured getting to your computer to look up the doctor's phone number and the subsequent trip out to the car, because I went through almost the exact same thing when I tore my meniscus a few years ago. Ultimately, though, yours sounds much worse, in that my pain was manageable as long as I kept my leg absolutely still, whereas with gout the pain is pretty much unceasing. Hope it clears up soon!
