Summary: Kyuhyun and Sungmin are childhood friends, family friends, but no, they are not lovers.

“Sungmin-hyung, have you ever been in love?” Kyuhyun still remembers that question he asked Sungmin in the school field. Kyuhyun was in his first year of high school and a cute girl had caught his attention. It was, of course, his first crush that sent him searching for this childhood friend of his.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Sungmin said throwing the grass he was plucking out of boredom at Kyuhyun. “I’m in my senior year of course I’ve been in love. I’ve introduced you to all my past girlfriends, right?”

“I thought you just dated Sunny because she’s cute” Kyuhyun mused. Sungmin grabbed a handful of grass and threw it to Kyuhyun who avoided it but some still got to him. “Yah!!” Sungmin playfully pushed Kyuhyun’s head which Kyuhyun laughed to with such glee.

“I’ve been in love with all of them” Sungmin says it like there has been so many but of course Sungmin only dated 2 girls throughout high school. He wasn’t lying though. He had loved all of them just because he was their boyfriend but maybe some things weren’t meant for forever. But it was Ok. Sungmin could get over them.

“That fastening heartbeat and sweaty palms you get when you see her but the moment she smiles it’s like you’re in heaven and all the stupid things you do as though you’re trying to make a fool of yourself seems worthwhile.” Sungmin says dreamily and watches as Kyuhyun’s eyes wonder to the sky. Of course, the elder knew that this best friend of his had been crushing on that dumb new girl.

After a few milliseconds of comfortable silence, Kyuhyun snaps out of his trance and stared at Sungmin who had the haughtiest expression Kyuhyun had ever saw him wear. “See the thing is she’s…”

Sungmin knew even before Kyuhyun had opened his mouth that he would hear of this crush of his. And even if he knew, he chose to listen. Just in case he guessed anything wrong but of course he didn’t. They weren’t best friends for nothing, right?

The next thing Kyuhyun know is the girl of his dreams calling him at the school gate - just when he was about to call Sungmin for leaving without him. “Kyuhyun-ah” she smiled sweetly playing with the strap of her bag not daring to look at Kyuhyun straight in the eye. “Sungmin-oppa said you were good in maths. Do you think you could tutor me?”

Kyuhyun later found Sungmin cross-legged in front of his house playing with his mother’s cat. “See, I told you she liked you. She isn’t really that bad in maths by the way” He smirked before picking up the feline and leaving for his house next door. Kyuhyun soon found out that Sungmin had befriended the girl at the school library and indirectly brought them together.

Kyuhyun never got to thank Sungmin. But that was best friends were for right?

Sungmin was even there when they had their first kiss. Of course Sungmin didn’t want to be there on his own accord - I mean what kind of creepy best friend would want to watch your best friend’s first kiss. But because Sungmin had forced Kyuhyun to initiate the first step in being an official couple, Kyuhyun made sure he was there. Sungmin was, after all, Kyuhyun’s personal cheerleader.

So, Sungmin had watched their lips touch at Kyuhyun’s doorstep behind the bushes of Kyuhyun’s mother’s plants. And as soon as the girl left, Sungmin climbed out of the bushes, frowning at the dazed Kyuhyun. “Now, can I go home?” Sungmin whines and Kyuhyun just grins stupidly.

When Sungmin graduated his parents moved out from Kyuhyun’s neighbourhood - Sungmin got into a local university and lived alone.  Just because Kyuhyun and Sungmin were best friends it didn’t mean that they had to live next door to each other. It didn’t even matter that their parents were friends since they were young. It was life not a story out of a cliché novel.

But then, life still had friendships like those cliché novels where even if they were apart they still were best friends. Sungmin was Kyuhyun’s friend more than half of his life how could they just grow apart? It was somewhat impossible. Of course, they couldn’t chase pigeons in parks together anymore nor could they spend their money in trashy arcades but to heck with that. Life isn’t exactly a bed of red roses, right?

Sungmin had classes and he took a part time job at a pet shop. It would be easier to say that Kyuhyun had visited Sungmin frequently, hanging around at the pet shop, jumping on Sungmin’s bed in his lonely apartment or calling Sungmin when he had those girl problems stuck in his head. But this - this right here - was not the case.

See, Sungmin was a busy man. He took classes seriously and skipping any class at all was a big no-no. Kyuhyun on the other hand had found himself glued to his Starcraft much worse than ever. Of course, they didn’t stick to each other. They were best friends not lovers.

They didn’t lose contact all together though. There was still that occasional. “Hyung, I haven’t seen you in what? Decades?” conversations that later on led to them having nice lunch together catching up on all the things they should then slowly resuming to their respective lives.

During that time, if anybody were to ask Kyuhyun what Sungmin was to him the answer was certain in his head. “He’s my childhood friend. We go way back…” as he says it he would think of all the good memories he had with that guy, grinning like an idiot.

When Kyuhyun finally graduated from high school, Sungmin is there on his graduation day; smiling widely as his friend of more than a decade graduates as the best student in his year. And Sungmin is there as Kyuhyun celebrates it at home with his family. Sungmin help his mum with cooking then sits with his father and sister looking at all the babies photos of Kyuhyun - and Sungmin too because basically Sungmin was family.  And also Sungmin’s family was family.

They were family friends so Sungmin’s dad and mum along with his brother were at that celebration. Technically, Sungmin did help Kyuhyun’s mother with the cooking but then his mum was there too. And of course, he did sit with Kyuhyun’s father and sister looking at baby picture of them but his dad and his brother were there laughing at him. He was simply the stalk of laughter because Kyuhyun decided he wanted to shower therefore leaving Sungmin to their childhood misery - not that their childhood was a misery of course.

Though, Sungmin had a vivid memory of one particular issue that made him uncomfortable.

“Hyung, what’s this?” His brother suddenly announces loud enough for the whole neighbourhood to hear out of his excitement. Sungmin remembers cursing when he sees the picture his brother was pointing out. It was a picture of him kissing Kyuhyun as a child - his lips attached on Kyuhyun’s right cheek as Kyuhyun grins like an idiot. Sungmin must have been 6 or 7 from the size of Sungmin against the 4 or 5 Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun suddenly appeared with a curious glint in his eyes as he eyes the picture now in his noona’s hand. Everybody was laughing except for Kyuhyun and Sungmin.

“Kyuhyun-ah, maybe you should re-enact that!” Ahra says pulling Kyuhyun, Sungmin’s little brother quickly jumping in excitement - the kid was too hyper for his own good. “Yeah! Yeah! Hyung, do it!” then the kid rolled on the ground laughing along with the chuckles of the parents watching all their grown children acting like small toddlers.

“Yahh! That was when we were children. We’re grown now. Gosh, stop being so ridiculous!” Sungmin says grabbing Kyuhyun from his sister, hitting his own dongsaeng’s head lightly then stuck his tongue out towards Ahra. Ahra counter attacks and Kyuhyun just laughs. Sungmin’s mother then calls them for dinner making everyone skip to the dining room.

“You know what, hyung…” Kyuhyun said catching up to Sungmin who seemed to decide to leave Kyuhyun behind in the mist of his annoyance. “Maybe we should do a re-enactment. Just kiss me here~” Kyuhyun has the most cynical smile as he points his cheek towards Sungmin.

“Yah! Do you want to die?” Sungmin hits Kyuhyun on the head -a normal gesture - which Kyuhyun laughs to - another normal one.

It had always been like that. The younger seemed to really find a joy in watching Sungmin get annoyed of his teasing. Maybe Kyuhyun just liked the fact that Sungmin always did the same thing no matter how ineffective that gesture was. They never said it but it was like their code of friendship that kept them comfortable with each other.

Every other time they fight - be it about games, or girls or misunderstandings, they quickly heal the moment Kyuhyun breaks one of his snarky remarks to tease Sungmin. It works every time.

Even the moment Kyuhyun was about to leave Korea. Kyuhyun had never wanted to leave his hometown to study abroad but like the way Sungmin liked to put it “Korea is too small for you, bro”.  So Kyuhyun was off to America to further his studies and even though Sungmin drove his own car and has no problem waking up early in the morning, Kyuhyun was almost entering the gate when Sungmin arrived.

Sungmin ran for his life as he watched a smile slowly etch itself on Kyuhyun’s face when he sees Sungmin - probably he was laughing at how this image of Sungmin running. Sungmin can tell Kyuhyun had been up all night playing Starcraft all night just to throw away that heavy feeling of leaving home. Kyuhyun usually used Starcraft as a way to ignore his unwanted feeling so it wasn’t that hard to tell, really.

“You ungrateful kid!” Sungmin says hitting Kyuhyun on the head the moment their facing each other but this time Kyuhyun simply smiles holding the spot Sungmin had hit him. “You didn’t even wait for me”

The next thing Sungmin knew is he’s in Kyuhyun’s arms, Kyuhyun nuzzling into his shoulder and holding Sungmin with such a tight grip that Sungmin thought he would suffocate to death. But of course he didn’t. Kyuhyun lets go of Sungmin with a weak smile on his face. Sungmin looks at this friend of more than a decade and he’s sure his never seen Kyuhyun smile like this. “Hyung, I’ll miss you”

Sungmin feels a little embarrassed so all he can do is seem cross - though his insides are all warm - he’s hitting Kyuhyun on the head and Kyuhyun laughing at Sungmin with the familiar laugh Sungmin had heard so many times. With that laugh, Sungmin knew Kyuhyun would be ok and Kyuhyun knew that Sungmin was his childhood friend of course he would know all the right things to say to ooze of this crappy feeling he has from leaving.

Kyuhyun enters the airplane with a slight smile itching to show itself, though Kyuhyun simply wouldn’t allow it. Once he gets to his seat, he fishes out his phone to turn it off. He looks at the goofy picture of him and his sister as the wallpaper and smiles.

Maybe, he was going to miss Korea.

“Sir, please turn off your phone we are about to take off” a flight-attendant smiles at him.

“Ok, just give me a moment” Kyuhyun flips the phone open quickly messing with the setting before looking at it with a satisfactory smirk.

He switches off the phone but the image of Sungmin and him as the wallpaper still clear in his mind even as he drifts to sleep.

But he was certain he was going to miss Sungmin.
