It seems like Youtube is doing a major crackdown right now. They've been taking off episodes (which I find reasonable) for stargate and other shows but this is the first I've known of fanvids. Considering how many there are? Unless there is some kind of gnome out there telling on everyone and making everyone suffer.

I think the youtube tags feature is probably helping them out there, that or search, and nope, not just episodes they'll take off. They're going for it all, as makes sense really. What's more amusing and bizarre is that it's companies going after fanvids because of the clips. Would've bet previously that it'd be the music industry going after them for using songs...

It probably does. Although some people put popular shows in thier tags tog et thier video watched. Like there is this set of Melrose Place clips but it has Grey's Anatomy in it's tags so anyone searching for the one shwo would pull up thier video.

Considering the amount of musicvids I have a feeling they are going to have a lot of room left. Perhaps they aren't going to take all.

Well, that makes me crabby. I understand why the networks/YouTube are having such a knee-jerk response but I still think it's stupid to do this to fan-made materials that only promote the show. :(

And that was the only vid that David Hewlett had as a favorite too!! :( :(

That totally sucks. That video is one of my faves.

And I know youtube got rid of the leaked POTC trailer before I got to see it, but I saw it on Yahoo... does that mean Yahoo got the rights to show it or are they going to get law-bitch-slapped too?

I think that got taken down because it was a leaked version and some US tv show was meant to have the world premiere of the trailer, hence the crackdown. I think now it's public though...

I get what you're trying to say, but dulux and kodak make materials already designed to be used for original works so that analogy does'nt really work (unless you were being sacarstic and I missed it :o )

Anyway, in one sense yes, you could consider it original, like a collage using music and clips - except that's not currently accepted under copyright laws for such folkloresque use of others materials. I do wish there would be some exception for fanvids anf fic etc, since they only do good for the shows, but I suppose vidding might increase downloading which is only associated with piracy and the negative. Mind you, I'd always expected the problem with fanvids would be music companies saying it ruins business...
