From Faith to Houses of the Holy: belief systems of Supernatural

Firstly let me state up front: Sera Gamble and Kim Manners = OTP

Can you believe they haven’t worked together since Dead in the Water? That’s just wrong.

Sera (with Raelle Tucker) was responsible for the great episode Faith.

In that episode the boys’ stance on a greater good - oh lets call him God - as established:

Very nice meta.

However at the end of that episode Dean says he’ll pray for Layla even though he was not “usually the praying type”.

I think he was saying he would do it out of respect for her faith or her strength in her faith, not because he believed.

In contrast in Sam’s belief system being good, doing good is rewarded. That’s how he’s been behaving since he found out the secret. Save as many people as possible and maybe the balance of the scales will change - his good will be rewarded.Though Sam is more Constantine in his approach, trying to work up his cosmic karma points so that he might actually not be struck with the evil destiny. :) Of course that`s not how it works and it shouldn`t be the reason to do it. Yet I can understand his reasoning, he is simply terrified and looks for support wherever he can find it ( ... )

that if it exists just never bothers to get off its ass gorgeous way of summing up Dean's belief.

I think Sam must have some security in his belief, it survived Jess' death and all he's experienced since.

See, I would have liked to hear how long was "a long time" as in Sam praying because his belief in God seemed to me a rather new thing, born out of fear and desperation over what`s happening in his life right now. I could totally see something way Post-Jess, when the clues started to multiply that the YED might have a thing for Sam.

Yes I dont disagree that Dean believed he saw an Act of God, I just think he was more 'motivated' to see it this time. And I certainly think Dean believes in the existence of God, or Good, just that it isnt a strong part of his belief system, certainly not something he'd rely on.

i can see why Sam believes what is happening is inevitable and overwhelming, although part of him obviously does believe he can change it. I just feel calling it destiny gives it even more power. Okay I'll sound like Dean and say they need to approach it as they would any enemy. But of coruse they tried theat and it didn't work.

Oh boys. Oh show.
