Reading List

Well, I didn't quite reach my goal of reading 50 books in 2006, but I had fun trying anyway. And I'm sure I read a lot more books than I would have read if I didn't have a goal in mind. For 2007, I'm planning on reading certain books that I've always wanted to read, instead of trying for a certain number of books ( Read more... )

Have you ever read any Thomas Hardy? Jude The Obscure is pretty much the story of a stonemason in 19th-century England who falls in love with his cousin, and the problems that ensue therein. It's not a "silly romance" by any stretch of the imagination, though; Thomas Hardy's idea of romance is very stark and realistic. However, the book's also a bit of a downer, so... it depends on your personal tastes, I guess. I recommend giving it a shot, though.

Yes, actually. I read Mayor of Casterbridge for school this past year. I really liked it. That book sounds really interesting. And I believe it'll fit my tastes just perfectly. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

There is the Ramses series that I read awhile back. If you like history (especially Egypt) then I think you would like it.
There is also
THe Artemis Fowl series (easy read so you get through it quickly)
Vampire Kisses (this is so I could have someone to hate it too. Its okay but cheesy. It can be entertaining)
Dracula (why not?)
Grr...I am trying to remember the books I read. I am just looking at my shelf and there is not very much comteporary fiction. Mostly of the books I read are at the library. grr... I will think of something
I read "Cut". it was very interesting. I liked it though I can not remember much of it because i read it two years ago.

Thanks for those suggestions. I might read some of those if I can, but I don't know if I'll like them. I might try the Ramses series, I do know what you're talking about. And I guess I'll try Vampire Kisses, lol.

Book recs! Oh how exciting.

First off, if you're up to if, anything by Jeffrey Eugenides is pretty amazing. As far as I know he only has two books out: Middlesex and The Virgin Suicides. Both are written almost like poetry, moreso TVS. I mean, they're NOT poetry, Eugenides is just amazing with words. They've got some, uh, interesting themes (Middlesex deals with incest and gender identities and the such) but even if that kind of squicks you, it's presented in such a way that you barely blink an eye at it.

On a lighter night, ANY of David Sedaris' books are hilarious. I find it hard to really laugh out loud at books, but his stories are hilarious. Me Talk Pretty One Day is particularly funny, but all of them are great.

And finally, Wicked by Gregory Maguire. It's either a love it or hate it book, but I happen to love it. Most of his stuff is pretty good too, so I'd look into him.

:) Yay books!

Yes! I'm a book whore. XD

Oooo, I definitely wanted to read The Virgin Suicides. Thanks for reminding me. And I was thinking of reading Middlesex, but only if it's a real page-turner (because it is pretty long and all). The incest and gender issues don't bug me at all, lol.

I'm going to put Me Talk Pretty One Day on my reading list as well. I'll probably read more of David Sedaris' books if I like it. Wicked sounds like a good book to read, too.

BOOKS ARE AWESOME. hehe

Middlesex has it's ups and downs, but I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. Or the second. Or third. It kept me more occupied than the Virgin Suicides did, but they're very different books so it's hard to say. But I vote for you at least attempting to read it anyway :)
