That was very cool! I think I already did this writer's block on my own way before it was ever posted. I'll have to look to be sure, though your story is much more interesting than mine.
I've kind of been wanting to post the explanation for a while and just haven't. When I saw the writer's block yesterday, I figured it was as good a time as any.
I think I remember reading about your screenname. Some anime pegasus named pegasi - either that or the plural of pegasus, I can't remember - and the year you were born. Am I at least warm?
I knew it had something to do with some sort of character.
When I was in second grade, my friend "Nancy" and I were trying to figure out what the plural of pegasus would be. We were such nerds that stuff like that was the kind of thing we discussed, but we were too young to know about latin plural suffixes. But it was our first conversation, and we still remember it.
When we were in high school, we actually asked my Latin/physics teacher. Seriously, this guy knew everything and even if he didn't know, he was big enough to admit it, but would hazard a very educated guess anyway. He told us that since it was a word that originated in Greek, the plural would actually be pegasoi (sic?). But I think most people think of pegasi being the plural, so I think either way, it works.
**shrugs** It's the law. I can kind of understand it, but at the same time, it's not like we were flashing the camera or anything.
I'll see about getting that picture scanned. My parents' computer has a scanner, but it's ridiculously complicated to get images from the copy bed onto the computer.
I think some stories behind usernames are more interesting than others. But generally, yeah, it's kinda fun to find out!
Yeah, it is so very far from my real name. Growing up, I never really had one nickname that stuck. I mean, different people had their own nickname for me, but there was never any universal "let's call her ___ for short!" So I was always bad at picking out nicknames, and when I sat down to create my first on-line accounts, that's what came to me. In a way, it's appropriate. So many early on-line users were X-Files fans, a lot of on-line fandom terms were defined by X-Files fans, and fan fiction really exploded because of X-Files. But the reference is obscure enough that it's a little more unique than, say trustno1 or something like that.
I'm realizing now that the Expo was over ten years ago! Man, I feel old!
The user names I've used on the internet are far from my real name as well. I was like you and never had a nickname that stuck (I don't even remember having one until my husband started calling me Bright Eyes). Since I didn't have anything else to go off of I used the names of my role playing characters. I started with ms4tuna (for Sierra Fortuna). I came up with that as a joke for what her license plate would be and I liked it enough to make it my AIM screen name.
I never had any 'brush with greatness' experiences... not any cool ones anyway. I met four of the (then) six Dr Whos, but not by choice or design but that's about it :(
Haha! "Brushes with greatness!" That's hilarious! Really, we were just over-excited fans. And as far as the Expo itself, I had actually been to the X-Files Convention a few years earlier that Gillian Anderson herself was at. I actually thought the earlier convention was a much better gathering - the Expo was so much more of a commercial for the movie and for the car they drove in the movie.
Still, the day of the Expo was a very fun day - more for the company I was with than anything else. Probably one of the better ones of my life.
Wow, that's really cool about meeting the Dr. Who's. One of my mom's friends has been a HUGE Dr. Who fan for decades. I wonder if she's met any of them....
