Title: All is Calm
Gift for: measi
Pairing: Blue!Ten/Rose
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Everything from The End of the World to Journey’s End, including that deleted scene (if RTD says it’s canon, that’s good enough for me!)
Warnings: Contains extreme holiday-related fluff (which isn’t a bad thing at all, actually)
Beta: lsm71059
Summary: On their first Christmas Eve together in Pete’s World, the Doctor and Rose plan for the future, including possibly having an uneventful Christmas
A/N: This was written for the oh_she_knows Secret Santa, where my prompt was “Silent Night.” I hope this fits the bill. The fact that RTD calls him Blue!Ten too makes me all kinds of giddy. Also, I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I last wrote Who!fic!

The Doctor sat on the cold concrete steps and sighed as he undid his bowtie. A hand holding a flute of champagne came into his line of vision. As he took it, his polite smile changed to a full-blow grin when another hand (the mate to the previous one) set a tray full of the assorted puff pastries making the rounds indoors onto his lap. He looked up. “You know me so well.”

Rose smiled down at him. “Do I? Take this.” She passed him her own flute and set about joining him, carefully arranging her party dress. When she looked suitably comfortable, he handed back her bubbly and popped three of the canapés into his mouth all at once. This turned out to not be the best course of action as two were savoury and one was sweet. He grimaced and downed his drink. When he grabbed for Rose’s, she held it out of his grasp, smirked and shook her head at him.

He pouted until she wrapped an arm around his and rested her head on his shoulder. He fed her one of the nibbles and then they both say quietly for a while.

Rose broke the silence. “Do you miss it?” The Doctor gave her a confused look. She jutted her chin towards the sky.

“Yeah. Don’t you?” You’ve been away from it longer than I have.”

“Of course. How much longer?” She would ask him this every day since they’d started the project.

“A few months. Then it’s back to it. You and me through time and space. Got a whole new time and space to learn at that!” He smiled down at the blonde head that nestled against him and let out a contented hum.

“Just as it should be,” Rose said softly.

“Yeah. Just as it should be.” The Doctor wrapped his arm around her.

“Does it though? Bother you. Being stuck here until then?”

He pondered the question for a bit. “A little. But not as much as I thought it would. In fact, I sort of fancy knowing we’ll always have some place waiting for us. A home base, if you will. I just didn’t expect it to include all that.” They both turned their heads as the Doctor nodded to the guests mingling inside the Tyler mansion.

“Yeah, Mum likes showing off now that she can. But tomorrow it will just be family and then Boxing Day…” she trailed off.

“What’s happening then?” He’d remembered it being discussed but he’d tuned out the chatter for more important tasks such as having a staring contest with Tony.

“Mum invites kids from the council flats for the day. Opens up the house, most of it anyway, and let’s them fill up on biscuits and punch, hires some entertainers and gives them all little gifts. While she’s adapted quite well to living the life of a lady of leisure, she also remembers where we came from. Says she not too good to mingle with another tax bracket. Wishes someone would have done that for me.”

“That’s very good of her. Didn’t know she had it in her. Ow!” Rose had smacked him on the thigh but he could see she wasn’t all that angry. “And does Pete mind?”

“Nah. He loves it. He always loved doing charity stuff. Makes him feel like his money’s worth something. Plus, he knows better than to cross Mum. Are you sure you’re dealing with all this okay?”

“I suppose. It’s just…I guess I expected a quiet family bonding thing for a few days.”

Rose sat up and gave him an incredulous look. “It’s hardly like any of the Christmases we’ve shared have been quiet.”

“I don’t know, up until the sword fight, the second one was pretty peaceful.” He hadn’t yet told her about the Christmases he spent without her in any detail.

“For you maybe, what with being unconscious and all. Some of us we’re a bit busy trying to figure out what to do about the giant invading space ship.”

“And you were quite brilliant.”

“How do you know?”

“Because you always are.”

“Good answer.” She leaned back into him for a kiss. “All right, so being stuck here isn’t so bad.”

‘Here’ was quite literal too. They were staying in the guest cottage on the back end of the property. When he had said he was surprised she didn’t have her own flat, she explained that she did. But when the cannon started to work she’d sold it as she didn’t expect to be coming back. The subject was barely spoken of since. Though it had been several months, they both still felt a bit raw about exactly how they ended up.

“Yes and I should get used to the idea of a party here.”

“And are you as all right with that as you seem to be?” He knew she kept asking because it was a change from the man she knew him to be before.

“What, promising to love, cherish and be faithful to you for the rest of my days? And you do the same? Rose Tyler, I’d do that anytime, anyplace, anywhere. In fact, when it’s an option, I’ll do that very thing. But Jackie Tyler planning nuptials of mine?” He shuddered.

“Keep that up; I’ll be sure to make Mum chase you about with the mistletoe. She’s only a couple of drinks away from doing that anyway.”

“Oi! Watch it Blondie!” She snickered, as she usually did when the bit of Donna inside him bubbled out. Even he had to admit, the spontaneity of it had made for some entertaining moments. Especially with Jackie.

His soon-to-be mother-in-law insisted they make their connection legal in their little part of universe that she could bare witness to and then shoved a jeweller’s catalogue in front of him one evening before he turned in. Rose and Pete had been out of town on Torchwood business and the Doctor had been trapped. He’d never admit it out loud, but he’d been thinking of the idea anyway and Jackie’s push was just what he needed. Rose engagement ring, which was sparkling on her left hand even in the moonlight, he’d ended up designing himself. He’d been freelancing at UNIT and Torchwood and they compensated very well for his expertise. He happily used a good chuck of that money on Rose.

Under the elder female Tyler’s keen eye, he took Rose to the back garden, down the very steps they were currently sitting on, one Sunday afternoon after dinner, dropped to one knee and proposed. She responded by saying, “It’s about time!” threw her arms around him and snogged him breathless. She’d taken great delight ever since to point out that she never actually said, “Yes.”

It was agreed by all to make it a small, private ceremony in that same garden come spring. The paps had made The Life and Lack of Loves of Rose Tyler, Pete Tyler’s Enigmatic Daughter a point of high interest. When the Doctor appeared as suddenly as she did some time later, interest grew even more. They took it all in stride and their work kept them conveniently out of the glaring spotlight most of the time. However, their wedding was about them, so the less attention to be drawn, the better. On top of that, they were planning the longest, most unusual honeymoon of all time.

Jackie would be matron-of-honour and Pete the best man. Tony would serve as ring barer. The guests would be the friends they’d had time to make from work and the few they had had time to make outside of it. The Tyler estate would be the safest place from an alien attack that day.

While Jackie was taking care of the flowers, catering and other such details, Rose had picked out her and Jackie’s dresses. The Doctor was not allowed to see them, which he thought was most unfair. He was wearing his tuxedo as a test run this night and knew from the glint in her eyes when he’d appeared in it that it met with Rose’s approval. While Pete politely declined the offer of wearing Converse with his suit, Tony was thrilled about it. Though, at the rate he was growing, his would be purchased closer to the date.

Until that time, they made regular visits to the main house for dinners and company while spending a good deal of time cuddling in the cottage. All the floors of it, bar the bathroom and kitchen, which were tiled, had uncovered hardwood. No carpets. Most of the doors were left open or had been removed entirely. That was how the Doctor found it. When he asked, Rose just shrugged and said, “I guess I wasn’t too keen on them either.” He did admit to her, one tranquil evening curled up by the fire, that even if this was all they had, no TARDIS, no travelling, it wasn’t all that bad.

Rose shivered a bit against the Doctor’s arm. He returned his attention to her. “You cold?”

“A little. Should have grabbed a wrap before I followed you out.”

“Here, let me do the chivalrous fiancé thing.” He slipped out of his jacket and passed it to her. He smiled warmly when their eyes met as she took the time to smell it before standing to slip it on.

While she was doing that, one of the catering staff came out to remove the now empty tray and refill their glasses. The Doctor gave the newcomer a bright, friendly grin. “Thank you…I don’t believe I caught the name.”

The girl returned the smile. “Zoe, sir.”

“Don’t call me sir. Doctor’s just fine. Are you all set for the holidays, then?”

“Oh yes, si…Doctor. When I finish here, I’m off to my sisters, where the whole family is gathering, just like every year. Then it’s back here for Boxing Day.” She straightened the items on her tray. “What about you? Will you be here?”

“Wouldn’t miss it.”

“Well then Doctor, I’ll see you then.”

“I’d be delighted. Merry Christmas and if I don’t see you again, Happy New Year!” He was fairly certain Zoe winked at him over her shoulder as she walked away; a walk that seemed to have a hitch in it. He made a mental note to tell her to get it checked out the next time he saw her. He turned to see Rose with an eyebrow arched. She flipped her hair out of the collar of his dinner jacket and she sat back down with a huff. “What?”

“Nothing.” He knew that ‘nothing’ and knew it always meant something. Something he usually couldn’t figure out on his own.

“She was nice. Bit of a problem with her hips. She should see a doctor.”

Rose snorted. “I’m sure she’d like that. Acted like I wasn’t even here.”

“No she didn’t. Well…maybe she did. Wonder why she did that.”

Her eyes went wide. “Because of you!”

“Me? Nah.”

“Yes, you. You are such a flirt.”

It was his eyes that got large this time. “I am no such thing!”

“Our first date you chatted up a tree.”

He opened his mouth to speak and both her eyebrows shot up. His teeth clicked together as he shut it again. He rubbed the back of this neck.

“She was a very nice tree. She even showed me her liana, something very intimate for her species.” He looked at Rose. “And that’s not helping, is it?”

She shook her head. “No.”

“Jabe did sacrifice herself, so you know a bit of flirting is okay I think.”

“All right.” She scooted back against his side and took his hand. “Doesn’t excuse most of the other times though.”

He ignored that remark. “Besides, what about you, eh?”

Her head was halfway to his shoulder when it snapped back up. “What about me?’

“You certainly aren’t shy with throwing your womanly wiles about.”

“That’s different. It’s what my gender does. And I only do that when it helps the situation. You’re a little bit freer with your wiles.”

“Hmm.” He didn’t want to tell her she was right but he’d run out of arguments. “It’s getting chilly.”

“I’m quite comfy, what with this nice warm jacket and all.”

“You know I’ll just get you back tonight when my cold toes touch your legs under the covers.” He was smug in the knowledge that that very action always made her wriggle deliciously against him.

Rose picked at the hem of her dress and smirked to herself. “Not if I stay up here. Mum would love it and Tony would only be annoyed that he had to wait for you to open his presents.”

“No he wouldn’t. Tony’s my biggest fan. Especially after what I got him.”

She was amused. It was true; Tony simply adored the Doctor and followed him anywhere his little legs (and Jackie) would allow. “And what would that be?”

“A sonic screwdriver,” he said proudly.

“You didn’t!”

“No, it’s just a tube with a light bulb that lights up when he pushes a button. Still, it will keep him from nicking mine and he can’t get into too much trouble with it.” Rose smiled and kissed him on the cheek. He smiled back abut still asked, “What was that for?”

“For being you.”

“I’ll just have to keep that up then.” He stretched his legs out in front of him and Rose matched his position. He bumped his leg against hers. “Are you really going to make me sleep alone tonight?”

“I guess not. I sort of like having you around. Can’t sleep without you snoring in my ear.” She shrieked as the Doctor lifted her into his lap and tickled her sides. After a half-hearted struggle, Rose settled in and burrowed her head into the side of his neck.

They rocked together for a while, just enjoying the silence, something that wasn’t always present in their lives. The quiet scene was interrupted by the French doors being thrown open and the lady of the house yelling out to them. “You lot gonna stay out here all night? It’s not just me who has guests to entertain, now do I?”

They turned their heads to see Jackie standing, backlit from the house lights and hands on hips. The carollers she’d hired to stroll the party were singing behind her and their voices rolled out into the night. The Doctor and Rose laughed together. This caused Jackie to roll her eyes and shake her head, knowing they were in their own little world and would be back in their own time.

Rose stood and shook out the skirt of her dress. “Promise me we’ll find a calm, silent, peaceful spot to spend some future Christmas.”

“I could, but what fun would that be?” She cocked her head in agreement and held her left hand out to his right and helped him up.

He brushed off a piece of imaginary lint from her sleeve. “So, Rose Tyler, when it’s time, where we gonna go first?”

She grinned when the memory hit her and looked up at the sky and pointed. “Um, that way. No, hold on.” She moved her finger an inch to the right. “That way.”

His finger followed hers. “That way?”

“Yeah.” She looked at him expectantly.

“Yeah. That way.” They grinned at each other then up to the stars and their future.

All is calm. All is bright...
