Unreliable

“That color does not suit you.”

She's gotten so used to Eric invading the safest places of her that she jumps only because there's a face in the window, not because it's his. She rolls her eyes. “Not that what you think matters the least bit.” There's something personal to her annoyance, a familiarity that she has to remind herself he doesn't feel. She's been dreaming of what it would be like to be with him. Not the other way around.

What could he possibly have left to dream about?

“Won't you come outside, Sookie? The night is perfectly clear.” Even outside her dreams, he wants to show off the moon and stars.

“You've got a lot of nerve,” she says and she sees his eyes catch on the ring and she wishes she wasn't wearing it. Her defiance of him has nothing to do with Bill. “You went to all that trouble to trick me into drinking your blood.” His face has yet to betray any regret on that count. “Why bother? The least you could've done was show up to make sure I wasn't gettin' hacked to pieces last night.”

He had known she was in danger, of course. “I was otherwise engaged. But I am here now.”

They both wait for her to say it. “Well I am otherwise engaged,” she puns, nose turned up, in accordance with their expectations.

“Congratulations on your true love,” Eric says with an edge she doesn't like. But it's a joke and funnier than the one she made. She has no idea how short eternity is.

Sookie snorts, refusing to place her happiness in the context of his boredom. “You know I thought... with Godric... I thought maybe you'd....”

“Changed?” He laughs, cruel because there is no cruelty in it. At least then, she could have been appalled. “Like every being, you are your own narrator, Sookie. You expect the advantages you've become accustomed to in fiction.”

His story is his own and she's started in the middle of it. He will not progress simply because she's begun watching.

He gestures, inviting her out the open window where he hovers, impossibly, above the Earth. He's inviting her to another world. But she's only just gotten back to this one and now she's been invited to stay.

She laughs. “You couldn't possibly have thought I'd go with you.”

He inclines his head. Granting her whatever answer she chooses. “Enjoy your fairy tale then,” he says.

But by the time she leaves the bathroom, that last word has already changed to fiction.
