That book sounds delightful and I shall attempt to lay my hands on a copy very soon.

Also: I've been told off for thinking strangely in the past by uncooperative English teachers so there's this feeling of "oh no I'm going to be judged for being different so sorry I feel that [character] is behaving in this fashion because of [reason X] instead of [reason Y]"
ENGLISH TEACHERS. ENGLISH TEACHERS WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. I remember when we were reading Antigone in tenth grade and I dared advance the opinion that Antigone, while noble and loyal and brave and all that, could maybe CHILL THE HELL OUT AND GET A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE. I was made to regret this. And I spent a lot of time throughout HS English trying to get into the heads of the characters I found most interesting who also always seemed to be the teacher's least favorite. I'll grant that on some of them I was reaching, or just being contrarian, but honestly. For a teacher to discourage students from thinking is UNPARDONABLE ( ... )

ENGLISH TEACHERS WHY. I feel for you so much. Hey, hey teachers. Free thought is not bad! Free thought is what makes the discussion interesting, all these conflicting opinions and wildly differing interpretations and, and crazy moon logic! Oh wait that's right English class is actually supposed to teach you to blindly follow someone else's way of thought instead of drawing your own conclusions. How foolish of me.

LET US DISCUSS ALTERNATE CHARACTER INTERPRETATIONS SOME DAY. Not just The Secret History, should you get around to it, but... well, anything, really. I mean, how often do I get to do that?

I'd need to go back and re-read the Roger one to be certain of the time period I was thinking of, but with Greene I was inclined to think perhaps the 1920s ( ... )
