I think you have to narrow it down to which teams are playing in the world cup, and then choose the one team you are cheering for. Mine is France :D I would usually cheer for Lebanon or Syria, but they aren't even top 50. I also have issues cheering for England, though it's in my ancestry as well.
I have to say that, if you follow the practice of other immigrants, you post the flag of the country you came to Canada from. And I completely agree with your sentiments on posting the US flag! Life is hard.
Let flap your flags! Critical thought about nationalism and colonialism aside, they're bright and cheerful. ;^)
Ireland isn't in this year (though I was in Ireland during the 1994 World Cup and let me tell ya, the whole country shuts down to watch their matches), and neither is Wales, so by next available team based on ethnicity/ancestry, I ought to be cheering on England (whose flag at least has a lesser association with colonial empire than does the Union Jack, though it is evocative of the crusades if one cares to dig that far back into England's bloody history), but I tend to root for the underdog... and if I had to pick an arbitrary reason to cheer on a team, I might support Brazil for their fabulous contributions to music.
I'm not much of a sports fan, myself, but I like to know a little so I can converse (or at least not nod off) with family members who are (like my brother-in-law, who has a TFC blog or my nephew the soccer-playing hockey fan).
