Trick of the Light
by missfoxie
Pairing: Kara/Laura
Rating: Barely PG-13 I guess; most definitely suitable for all those likely to read it
Disclaimers: These characters are not mine, belonging as they do to a Mr Ron Moore. I'm just playing.
A/N: Not beta-ed, so all mistakes are my own. This was originally written as a drabble for femslash100 as a response to the 'Sight' word prompt but I went slightly over the word limit, as I'm nothing if not a wordy and easily carried away little thing.
Word Count: 273
Summary: 'Just because it's there, don't mean you see it anywhere, maybe it's a trick of the light'

Trick of the Light

You people have no idea, do you?

No frakking idea.

She stands there in front of you, all cool competence and control wrapped up in a sharp blue skirt suit. Telling you what you want to hear and being who you want - no - need her to be. Letting you put all your fears on her shoulders because she can take it, you know she can. Smiling the smile that makes you feel a little bit warmer. Eyes shining with a sincerity you thought these dark times would’ve long destroyed.

Apologies if I look like a smug bastard right now, but none of you have a clue.

None of you have seen her, blouse rumpled and open, wild-eyed and swollen-lipped. Not seen her knuckles go white as she grips onto her desk, skirt shoved up to her hips. Not seen a shudder run through her body whilst she bites her lip in an attempt to keep her cries to a safe volume.

You haven’t witnessed those eyes switch from sincerity to a steely pragmatism that puts gooseflesh on your skin. Watched that mouth frame phrases directing you to disobey orders then lay the blame at her feet. Experienced her spearing you with ugly truth that puts chaos in your mind.

But even those times when her breathing’s erratic and her hand is tangled in your hair, even when her lips are forming words that make the air colder around you, there’s always something else. Something hidden from you, glinting behind those eyes. Some strange composure that’s keeping all of her together and just out of reach.

Frak.

I have no idea either.
