John might consider the best moment of graduation to be the point when he finally dared look far into the crowd to see who'd managed to show up on his behalf. It was no surprise Nancy was out there, sitting with Dave and his father. John chose to ignore their hands waving in his direction. But farther back and much less frightening (relatively speaking) was the girl he'd been missing desperately and yet had also been hoping wouldn't bother to attend.
Pulling out his cell, he'd quickly texted Nancy to give his apologies to his father and Dave that he'd see them the following day for brunch rather than after the ceremony since there was something a little more important that John felt needed doing. Okay, so his actual text was more along the lines of: not coming 2 dinner 2nite. c u 2morrow. He thought this was clear and to the point.
John leaned back in his chair and rolled his shoulders, trying to loosen the building tension. He just had to wait until after the graduates were dismissed. And hey, if seven months of waiting hadn't killed him, John figured he could suffer through another hour or so.
Deciding it would be wrong to text Jaina while he waited, he stuffed the phone back in his pocket and tried to pay attention.
