It had started on a Tuesday for god's sake. John hadn't even been able to hide or pretend he'd gone out of town for the week because there was no avoiding turning in the last papers of the semester before finals started. Stupid month of April.

On the up side, Mitch was dumb enough to believe John had gone out of town just when his 'cousin Sue'

It wasn't just the fact that Jaina had gotten used to spending her weekends out here, it was also that she was kind of hoping to make his... few days at least a little better. So there'd been a surprise portal out, and she was currently knocking at the door and hoping Mitch didn't answer.

She probably didn't realize that when John didn't expect anyone, he chose to not actually answer the door. Mitch had a key and no one else needed to meet Sue, thanks.

She knew he was in there, and knocked again to give him a chance.

Then she called, "I can and will pick the lock."

Oh of course, Jaina wanted to witness this first hand. He felt he should have known.

"You know, you could try calling first. A girl likes to have time to get herself together for company," he said, going and opening the door.

"I thought you'd tell me no," she said when she saw him. At least he looked the same as last time, and there were no further changes to get used to that she could see. "Easier this way. Hi."

"I would've told you no," he said, making his way back to curl up on the sofa. "Mitch thinks I'm my cousin Sue, just so you know."

"And where's John?" she wondered, stepping inside and closing the door.

"Gone to see you," he said, crossing his arms over his chest.

Jaina winced. "Okay, I'll work on the cover for that one."

"Yeah, yeah, like Mitch'll notice," he sighed. "I'll just flash him some boobs and he'll go into a happy coma."

She frowned even as she went to put her bag in John's room, nice and out of sight in case that didn't work. "Tell me he's not that desperate."

"He screwed the brainless pillow, Jaina, I have no hope for the guy," John shrugged watching her walk around.

Okay, point. Coming back to him, she asked, "How are you doing?" Because she really was concerned.

"Haven't slit my wrists yet," John rolled his eyes. "I'm fine. Used to it even."

"It's been... three days?" she guessed, trying to do the math.

[missed_the_gate]

"You've got me toward the end of day four," he corrected easily. "It's Friday night. The guys wanted to show me around the town, but something told me that would only end in tears." For them.
