on writing: wank edition.

I have a general policy of non-wankiness. It's the "ignore it and it will go away" policy. I don't comment on wanks, don't encourage wankers, don't take things too seriously and never, ever defend any actions that I don't think need defending (such as personality traits ( Read more... )

I'm a little bit different from you, in that there are certain authors or actors or authors who appall me to such a degree that I can't like their work. Here on LJ as well as in the professional world. But they are rare, and when I discover my feelings are so negative? I avoid their work, and them, and go on my merry way. I read a bit of the VM drama post last night, which struck me as very typical of fandom. YOu're so right that everybody's tastes are different. It is to sigh.

Do you find that those actors/authors are ones that you avoid because some abhorrent aspect of their personality/politics etc that you may not have noticed before then become apparent in their work? I can see retroactively disliking something because of that new realization. Otherwise, I feel like I would probably still like it, even if I chose not to seek out the creator's work any more.

It's kind of like (going back to) the Opal Mehta saga. I certainly have MORE distaste for the book because of the way she wrote (or, in this case, DIDN'T write) it. I wouldn't choose to read anything of hers again. But even if I had read it before all the drama, I probably would have just thought it was a silly story - not great, derivative - but I wouldn't have suddenly believed it was a horrible book when the plagiarism accusations came out.

But, yes, I also know what you mean - it's the same reason I won't ever read A Million Little Pieces - the author disgusts me so much that I really don't want to touch it. Maybe because I'm afraid I would ( ... )

It usually is because some aspect of the writer's or actor's personality becomes apparent in their work. For instance: Tom Cruise, who I think is a raging psychopath and will no longer see any film he's in or produced. But there are also authors or show runners who've done things to enrage me, and it's way harder to regard their creation without seeing their shadow ( ... )

Wait, where is this coming from? Is this the VM hate meme again?

Not liking a work because of the person it came from? Oh, some people are so silly. It's like my mother saying she won't listne to The Who because they smashed guitars. Umm, okay, great rational, mom!

You're absolutely right, if all people seriously couldn't enjoy something because of the person who created it there really would be few things to enjoy.

Ah yes. I don't feel like linking it because - well, I don't CARE. But someone said that they thought Hannah and I were good writers before the Liberation, but since reading the DVD commentary/learning how "pleased" we are with ourselves, now don't [like our writing]?

I thought it was fairly obvious that the commentary was as tongue-in-cheek as the fic itself, and that we only expected people who were interested to read it - we didn't think it was a necessary item, it was just FUN for Hannah and I, which is what has driven us all along. But ah well. What can you do.

I'm not 100% sure what the person (people?) meant by their posts, and it's pretty easy to misinterpret what someone may or may not be saying in these hate things - which is why I don't hold any stock in them.

But I felt like posting about it, because I'm sure there ARE people who do feel that way. And that, as I said, is just sad.

Personally, I only read your fic because I heard you raped a nun once. And I really hate nuns.

I DID rape a nun! With a baby panda!

Oh, those were good times.

*nods* Raping nuns with endangered species is always a good time.

Personally, I kill koalas. They're like, half bear/half monkey. The most vicious killers in the animal kingdom. That whole herbivore thing is just a COVER.

I don't encourage wankers

THIS IS NOT WHAT I HEARD. *giggle* I heard that you do encourage wankers...on your lawn and the couch and other places in your house.

It is the only reason that I read your stuff. I'm afraid that for the second day in a row, you've stolen my faith in the universe and killed my soul. *cries*

Well if *I* can't provide a safe haven for Austin's chapter of Public Masturbators R Us, then WHO WILL???

I'm afraid that for the second day in a row, you've stolen my faith in the universe and killed my soul. *cries*

I kill your soul, THEN I engage in necrophiliac rape with your soul, using a baby panda. NEVER EVER forget it.

Call me a moral relativist, but I think life becomes much richer (and more bearable), when one steps out of the BlackAndWhite and into the Grey.

Those who constantly allow only one aspect of a situation to form their entire conception of it cheat themselves out of a lot that life has to offer.

PS. I own no cable TV and am currently watching The O.C. Season One again on DVD.
1. Hopefully this will inspire some fic; one of my recent resolutions has been to be more creative.
2. I was standing on the supermarket checkout line and in idly reading a tabloid saw Misha Barton referred to as former OC star. WTF??

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Oh, you missed the MOST JOYOUS OCCASION! In the season finale, Marissa was in a car that got forced off the road! And rolled over! And then started fire. And then, THEN, as if that wasn't enough, EXPLODED.

(She was out of the vehicle when the exploding took place, sadly)

She died in Ryan's loving *koff* arms.

The spoiler alone was enough to make me watch the finale. *sniffle* Good times.
