Anti-fan fiction criticism, and how it hurts writers.

By now, I suspect just about everyone has heard about Diana Gabaldon's rant about fanficA lot of people have addressed the issues with her arguments: the way she states as fact that fanfic is illegal and compares it to breaking an entering. Or the way she likens porn about her characters to someone writing porn about her daughter, even though ( Read more... )

I was pretty peeved, too, both because of the implications about fans and the implications about writing.

It seems like I've been hearing about more fanfic panels at cons recently. I'd love to go to one someday. Good luck with yours!

Well, yes, what you said. Gabaldon (apart from showing several times that she, a published writer, is in need of a dictionary) makes really immature assumptions about something she admits knowing very little about, using shallow, surfacial arguments that are supposed to represent the whole. And she's surprised people respond vehemently. Hmmm. Me thinks the lady needs to buy a clue, half assed apology or not.

And for the record, I started writing original fiction in my teens, and gravitated back to fanfic in my twenties. That's where I learned the most of all, like you. If it's a sign of immaturity, well. Apparently I just can't seem to grow up! {/end snark}

Same here! I wrote some epic Star Wars fics when I was really young, but abandoned that for the Great American Novel thing. I dabbled with some Harry Potter one-shots off and on, but it wasn't until Torchwood that I really started writing again, and finally "got" writing as something other than a career.
