Quick question!

Is The Story Girl (L.M. Montgomery) worth reading? Certain reviews have deemed the writing as "saccharine" and it almost sounds like a collection of short stories mixed with admiration for an excessively idealized main character. What do you think?

I personally loved it and "The Golden Road"...I was able to get through those but not "Anne of Green Gables".

Definitely worth reading; then continued in 'The Golden Road'. Funny you should mention this, cause I'm now re-reading all of my Montgomery books! :D

I loved "The Story Girl"! Course, I'm a fan of all of the LMMontgomery books I've read, so if you don't like her style then you probly won't like this book. But I would recommend it to anyone. :)

I find some of L.M. Mongomery's work not to my taste and went into "The Story Girl" with lowish expectations. It is worth the read. Parts of it made me unhappy, but other parts had me cheerful for days. :) I remember writing about it on Bibliophyles...don't know where that post is!

Made you unhappy? Aw, why? But it's good to hear that you like it despite not being a wholehearted fan of Montgomery; I guess I should try it out! :) (I was considering getting Photoshop for my birthday, but am probably going to get a handful of books and some pocket cash instead. ;))

Just basic Montgomery-ish-ness. Feminism, evil-grown-ups, low opinions on traditional Christianity, stuff like that. Have you read it yet? Hehe...I guess that the heroine being "Sara" also put me in a funny view! :D

I haven't read it yet! Just started Half Magic, by Edward Eager, which has sort of an E. Nesbit-like charm (though definitely not as good as E. Nesbit's books). I've actually kind of found Montgomery's views on traditional Christianity refreshing, at least in the Anne of Green Gables series (she jokes about animosity between different denominations and challenges rigid ideas about what heaven is like). But it's also just good to find a series that talks unashamedly about God in a good way without being overbearing; it's the balance between the atheistic stories of today and the overpious stories of yesterday (*cough* Elsie Dinsmore *cough*).

Hehe! It's not very often one reads a story with one's name in it, huh? It kind of tickled me while reading Pride and Prejudice to read my name so often in association with a beautiful, witty, sensible girl who's fond of walking! :D
