The right one actually has more color depth,But I prefer the cell-shade one though. ^^ I think it fits your sharp lineart more. (and I'm rather fond of graphical style fanart) For more depth,try adding some gradients in new layer(set to overlay or softlight --well,that's my favorite method indeed ^^) It's rare to see RaiKaya fanart and this pict made me giggle of cuteness! keep it up♥
I'm leaning towards the cell-shade too. But I'm fond of the other since I'm really pleased with the blending on Kaya's clothing though, but then again the blending for Raidou's looks funny. x___x Thanks for the advice, I just tried it out, it's subtle but it works! I'm still experimenting, so do I just use a white/black, like 50/50, gradient? What percent opacity is best? I can't choose between soft light or overlay. XDD Do you have any examples of art with this effect? I went through four pages of RaiKaya fanart at pixiv, and I'm surprised this hasn't been done yet. .____.
I like the coloring on both, but if I had to pick one, I'd choose the top's technique compared to the bottom image. :)Mostly because it just fits the image better.
Yeah, my thoughts too. I'm also thinking of re-doing the Argilla slurm pic with neat lines and all, I wonder what type of shading I should use for that. I want her chest to really pop out. XDD
But the crisp shading looks better on Raidou's girl's uniform I think. I do like the way the soft shading looks on Kaya's boy's uniform though. I think (not sure, just my opinion) that on Raidou's clothes, the soft shading is too soft and it doesn't make the fabric look the right weight and texture, but on what Kaya's wearing it looks great, especially on the folds around her waist area.
I think that a highlight layer as well as a shadow layer might look nice. I dunno if you were going to do that anyway since you're still in-progress on this. Also, I think you're missing shading on Kaya's hand and cloak, but that might also be because you're not finished yet.
I'll definitely need a highlight layer for the hair. Do you think the clothing needs highlights too? I'm unsure of how to apply it. :/ I totally hate the way Raidou's uniform turned out with the blending, so I'm glad the cell-shaded one received positive feedback. ^^;;
Thanks for the tips! I'm going to choose the crispy one to work on.
I think that some highlighting on the skin and clothing wouldn't go amiss.
For highlights on clothing, I recommend 'rim-lighting' around the edges. You've already got some going on along the edge of the visor of the hat. If I were doing it, I would have some around the top of the hat, perhaps down the edge of the arm, or the cloak. If you like using a layer set to 'multiply' (that's what they call it in photoshop, I don't know if it's different in what you're using), then another layer set to 'soft light' with a very pale yellow or blue brushing around the edge where the light would hit might look good. that was the worst description ever, sorry. please ignore if I'm making no sense!!

It looks good without highlights too anyway.
I can't wait to see the finished version.
