On NYE one of my colleagues resigned. Last week I asked for a payrise. Yesterday my request was denied. Today I discovered the main reason was that management believed I'd only asked because of my colleague's resignation; i.e because I thought I had them over a barrel. Humph. Not very encouraging

I've heard* that the thing to do is to try again in 3 or 6 months with examples of why you feel the raise is appropriate. Provided they've filled the vacancy by then, at least they couldn't use that excuse again?

* not working in the kind of area where you ask for pay increases - they either happen or (like now) they don't - I have no experience to offer.
